Chunky perlite for Hempy?

Hello,

Working on my first grow currently in soil and would like to give hempy buckets a try next.

I’ve been doing some research and I’m thinking I want to keep it simple and use straight perlite. I’ve read through a few threads where they did this and I saw it was recommended to use “chunky” perlite.

I’m having trouble finding this locally and I’m wondering if anyone could point me to a good place to order a big bag online that would be well suited for this.

Regular perlite works just fine. You can get a bag of 4cuft for around 30 bucks.

i've done hempys with perlite and perlite/vermiculite. i thought i had better results with the perlite/vermiculite.

Chunky would be great for the bottom especially - my local hydro shops have them on deck. Sucks yours don't - ordering medium online is a rip off usually but you'll be fine with regular perlite anyway

I used to use hydroton back in the day for the bottom. I saw no major benefit

I highly suggest you rinse the shit out of it before you use it because there will be a lot of dust, which when wet is just sludge. I use 2 - 5 gallon buckets filled 3/4 of the way with water - dump in some perlite - sift what floats with my hands and place it in the 2nd bucket - sift again with my hands and place in the grow bucket. You'll be amazed at how much sludge accumulates in the bottom of the bucket. Good luck.

and whatever you do, don't breathe in perlite dust. that shit is bad for ya.
