Choosing and evaluating a dad.

Hi subcool and all - i cant seem to find a thread on this. I have seen sub reference posts about his method of choosing male plants - something to do with not choosing the earliest ones - but cant find the posts referred to.

so if anyone has any tips for choosing and evaluating a dad for seedmaking (i wont presume to call it breeding just yet;-)) then post it here or post a link to other threads where it is discussed.

thanks
V.

thanks SHOTTY

from what i have read so far some people think that vigor and early flowering in the male plant may be a bad way to select if you want potency.

opinion seems to be divided - the most popular indicator fromwhat i have read is smell

anyone else?

I judge my dads by how high i get off them.Node devoplment and stem thickness is good, but if the plant won't get you high ,what good is the rest.
When i grew outdoors,i would pull all of the males but one for my seeds.I found out that just selecting a male on his growth and looks did not make for good smoking pot.I then started testing the males.
I just cut one indica and one sativa male that i had going with a bunch of auto flowers. The indica would get me and the old lady buzzed with one bowl in the vaporizer.Good buzz that lasted, and better than what was being sold on the street. The sativa, you could smoke the whole plant and not get a buzz. What plant would you use to breed.OPH

You smoke males?
Only to see if they are worth keeping as a breeding male.I will take a couple of leaves and dry them in the oven at 200 degrees, pop them in the vaporizer and see what happens.
Why use males that have low thc production as a trait, when you can try your males and see if one is better than another.OPH

What about taste? Sometimes I snap off a fan leaf and chew on it. It ranges from a near fruit-like taste to very greenish lettuce/broccoli taste.

The basic idea in my head is the sweeter the taste, the more carbohydrates it may be able to effectively produce, which may make better buds in the female -hopefully.
