Maryland Hydroponics has 400 watt switchable digital ballast for $99 and switchable digital 600 watt ballast for $119.These run either bulb and use 30% less electricity are only 5 lbs are silent have cooling fans and are instant on.They also are overclocked meaning like the 600 watt ballast make a 600 watt bulb pump out 650 watts of lights

Digital Lighting systems
this is the only 1 i can find and the 400watt HPS are $123.00

also does anyone know if 400watt veg MH and a 400watt HPS flowering would be good enough for 6 plants or so?
 
yeah i know but im going to have 2 rooms 1 for veg and 1 for flowering so i can harvest every 2 months instead of every 4 months. i was saying which is best for veg and which is best for flowering cuz i will be using 2 400watt HIDs at the same time
 
save the money and use shop lights for your mother and clones. you dont need the 400watts for veg unless you will put them under a bigger light for flower. your plants will be huge and your 400 will lack the penetration to develope the under growth. i use a 400watt mh for veg then move to a 1000watt hps for flower. you will save alot of money on the light as well as elec. floros work great. 6500k spectrum or pretty close, no lees then 5500k t8 or t12's less then 50$ at the big box store.

also if you have say like a 60day strain, start half your flower room 30days before the other half and harvest every 30days!
 
got to ebay.

they have really good deals. 1000 watt for like 100 - 200 bucks. in store you can pay up to 500 for one. also buy your bulbs at ebay. i got my at 40 bucks. retail for 200 USD HPS Hortilux bulb .

out the door for my thousie, silver star air cooled hood, new bulb was almost 400usd. bulbs are 89 dollers new. ballast was less then 200 and the hood was a lil over 100. my 400watt mh paid a lil over 100usd from craigslist.
 
you can buy used ones from some hydro shops if your short on cash,a friend did a test on the digital ballasts,they were trying to get him to change over to them,he found that outside of the quick start up,the light meter never showed a very big differance,and some none,as for his bill at the end of the month compared to before the digital ballasts was about 5%,and hes been growing for 15 years.they are better then the 20 pound magnetic,they probably do extend lamp life,but they are not what they say they are,they probably test them against a tired system.
