Charcoal Filter-How Much Would This Help?

If I were to make my own charcoal filter, how much would it help the smell to use an exhaust fan to force the air through a large box of hardwood charcoal like you can buy for the grill? Maybe on the other side, I could put an AC filter as the final step before being released into the environment. Would this help reduce the smell at all?

lol thats a good question, but I think a better question would be why are you using grill charcoal instead of just activated carbon of some sort? as far as the AC filter goes that would depend on what grade that you get. they vary in efficiency, you can even get activated carbon filters for your central air.

Probably because I have no idea what I'm talking about. LOL

I was just trying to think of a way I could easily and cheaply develop a basic filter. I live in the country, so smell is not a big issue, but I'd hate for the meter reader to come onto my property and get a nice whiff of my grow room. I was thinking charcoal would be cheap and easy to find. Where would I look for activated carbon?

look thru the DIY section there are plenty of carbon filters or even use the search form. But you can check walmart or a local pet store would sell it

Word Up. Fuck Aquarium grade carbon, let's move it up a few levels to some food grade charcoal at home depot :D

i dont think regular charcoal would work.....because activated carbon(charcoal) was heated at really high temps making tiny air bubbles inside which makes the carbon have a much higher surface area....

I made my own filter right off the bat, it holds 15 pounds of carbon, activated carbon isn't cheap and where designing and building your own filter isn't impossible it certainly is a pain in the ass and as I said the carbon will cost you at least 3 bux a pound, around here theres a lot of competition and the price of a ready to go filter matched with proper fan is the way to go.The air has to be pulled slowly over the carbon , if pulled too fast it won't be totally scrubbed.
