CFLs really do Suck!!!

I have been somewhat ambivalent regarding CFLs(for non growing applications) for growing I agree fully with fdd!

Now there is a very good reason to hate them.
How many of you realize that here in the USA, our burgeoning Nanny state has determined that we "free" citizens will no longer have any choice of light bulbs!

This is another reason for me not to be a Bush fan.
This is truly disgusting!

On December 19, President Bush signed an energy bill that will, among many, many other things, force you to buy a new kind of light bulb. He did this because environmental enthusiasts don't like the light bulbs you're using now. He and they reason, therefore, that you shouldn't be allowed to have them. So now you can't.
-----------

Sam Kazman, of the antiregulation Competitive Enterprise Institute, likes to cite the now legendary Great Light Bulb Exchange sponsored by a local power company in the tiny town of Traer, Iowa. Half the town's residents turned in their incandescents for free CFLs--and electricity consumption rose by 8 percent. The cost of burning electricity went down, and demand increased. Funny how that happens.
--------------

U.S. News and World Report explained why: "Turning a CFL on and off frequently shortens its life."
Odd, isn't it--an energy-saving device that you're not supposed to turn off? Such complications undermine the extravagant claims made for the CFLs' energy savings. Let's say you're a CFL aficionado and you want to fetch your car keys from your darkened bedroom: You switch on the light, wait a couple minutes, finally find the wallet as the room slowly brightens, and then leave the light on, because you don't want to shorten the life of your expensive CFL. Will you remember to go back and turn it off 15 minutes later? Or will you get in your Prius, drive to Whole Foods, and leave the light burning for several more hours ......

Hey, wait a darn minute here Wavels. I shop at Whole Foods and I'm also considering a Prius as my next car. And ... I will install a CFL bulb in the fixture right above my three-gallon toilet tank that I must flush three times, using twice the amount of water my old toilet used to get the job done. I am a good little citizen and worker! ~lol~

Hahahaha
These new toilets are horrible...they actually waste much more water, and I have never met a homeowner who likes them, once again the law of unintended consequences rears its ugly head....
The road to hell is paved with good intentions and it seems to me that some among us are constructing a superhighway!!!!

Yeah I heard that the regular bulbs will be phased out by 2012. You won't even be able to buy them in 4 years.

Hi iblaze, well actually we have until 2014 to load up on the insidious incandescents....lollol!!!

iblaze I am curious to see if you think this ban is a good idea???

Most definitely not. Freedom of choice is always a good thing...
I don't see how the government can ban incandesents. Wouldn't that create a monopoly on the market?:-?

And what about the mercury that is inside them?.........I wonder what the government is going to have to say once people start getting health problems 30 years down the road b/c of their government-mandated CFLs?

Ah yes ... its the old unintended consequences thingie again, foisted upon us by the do-gooders in Washington.

Wavels ...

Have you ever heard Mark Levin rant about the three-gallon toilets? Another great idea from our liege lords in the Congress-place. ~lol~

Mercury from exploding CFL bulbs, Air bags that kill children and toilets that have to be flushed three times (six times for Med) to get the job done. What's next? Oh, I know ... fuel made from corn that costs six times as much to process than gasoline and pollutes five times as much ... counting the fertilzer run-off into the streams and oceans.

Gotta love our federal government!

I'm confused... I'll still be able to buy my HPS bulbs right?!?!?!
I dont get why they make such a big deal about the murcury in CFLs, it is an incredibly minute amount, its like 15 MG or somthing, while regular florecent lights have 2 drops which is like 1000 MG of murcury (exaduration :P) and people break thoes for fun :(

isnt ethenol supost to burn safer?! I thought that was why people liked it... its even worse ? that sucks :(
I read tht they can make like 100 gallons of etenol from 1 acre of hemp, while it takes 12 acres of corn to produce the same amount of ethenol:roll:

Yes sir....Philips is the foremost manufacturer, and they will enjoy a quasi monopoly handed to them by the Feds!!!

It will also create a thriving black market for the banned incandescents!

This is a really bad development!!

So, banning Incandescents in order to save energy is a bad development ? How can you see it that way ? One CFL Bulb can have the same light output as an Incadescent but use a 3rd the energy. Seems like a pretty good development to me.

And personally... I have no problem growing with CFL's. Heat never gets hotter then 76F so I'm able to keep the bulbs within 1'' of my plants without them burning. I'm using approx 200 watts worth of bulbs and have been for the past 3 months without any change in my hydro bill. I just believe as others on this forums, theirs tricks to learn if you want to grow with CFL's and not everyone is willing to take the time to learn.

Howdy Doc, if you had read the article, or my excerpts thereof, you would know why this is a horrible idea!

Besides the obvious problems with the mercury disposal or poisonings....

From my first post (article linked)

.... Half the town's residents turned in their incandescents for free CFLs--and electricity consumption rose by 8 percent. The cost of burning electricity went down, and demand increased. Funny how that happens

:joint:

PS
The issue of using CFLs for growth should be left to the grow forums.
CFLs will certainly work, but are hardly optimum! I do not like to compromise quality!

How is it funny ? Demand will always increase as the country or world increases... Their is no way electricity consumption will go down as the population increases etc...

And as proven, the CFLs did save on electricity, but to compare that savings vs demand seems odd to me. Why not focus on more solutions such as the CFLs to save energy since demand is always going to rise and that is one thing we cannot quite control.

I'm replacing my bulbs with CFLs as they burn out, Big fucking deal. They put out enough light and last 3-5 times as long. I still wander the house turning out unnecessary lights. I doubt it will make that huge of a difference in my light bill. Heck, the 400W HPS is more than my whole house lighting combined. When I finish this grow, thats the last one untill I get my liscence. I'm still apprehensive about that though

i'm replacing all my CFL's with incandescents as they burn out. f&ck these stupid things. i go into the kitchen to grab a snack. gotta stand there 5 mins waiting for the bulbs to brighten up. we've been replacing them about every 45 days. they just fade out. incandescents get changed every 6 months. how am i saving again?

sure they have only trace amounts of mercury but mutiply that by the billions that are out there. how often do you change your shop lights. one bulb in the fixture every six months? now think about every light in your house. and like i said mine go in about 45 days. i have at least a dozen throughout my house.that's gonna start adding up pretty quick. EVERYONE will be release mercury, EVERYONE.

CFL's are stupid.

Boy, you must have bought the cheapest ones from China. Mine have been going in some fixtures for over a year. So now we have the big mercury scare again. Well, since I don't eat out of the local landfill, Im not too worried, afterall, didn't mercury come out of the earth to begin with. I think this mercury bullshit is just an excuse to waste energy, but this is America, land of the "free", so use whatever turns you on,~LOL~. It's certainly not worth having a huge arguement over, but I'm going to use them untill I feel they are worse than incandescent bulbs, To each his own.

I cant beleive that this is even a thread. Okay, so you dont like using these things in your grows, who cares. statistically you can see that you are saving and fdd, you ARE exxagerating, unless the walmart or HD you buy from is selling fake cfl's, mine def. last a great while, much longer than any incd. bulb. As well they are more efficient, Because they are taking away incand. bulbs, doesnt mean their will be a monopoly, HA! have you taken an econ, course in your life, Im pretty sure GE is not the only Co. in the worls to be selling CFLS, im actually pretty sure i see about 5-6 diff. brands, and whom ever thought that HPS will not be sold anymore, or not be able to be used needs to delete their post, these lights have and serve spec. purposes which cfl,s cannot perform, thus you precious light bulb will not be taken from the market. They are not taking away the freedom of choice( you could look at it that way) , but then again you could also havesaid that when theses incand. were developed back in the day...." those damn inventors, why is their only incand. light bulbs, wheres my fredom of choice!"....well thts all the disgust i can display in one sitting, you all have a good one writing all your nonsense to make your selves feel imptnt.-----why can no one ever discuss an idea, or give a solution, why only bagger those who try to make life improvments for others?!

really?!?!?! I use CFLs in most of my house now. have for the last year, so far havnt had to change one... except the one I broke, and they turn on just as fast. only problem I have is on a dimmer switch they flicker when you turn the dimmer all the way down. other than that I dont even notice I'm using CFLs
