I bought a cheap Valueline 8" fan 745 cfm and Variac speed controller for $150.
I use the Variac to run the inline fan at any desired speed. At half speed the fan is silent minus the small whooshing of air from the ducting (I use 8" insulated ducting from Home Depot).
This fan is quiet when the ducting is attached and the variac is a great investment whatever fan you buy. The speedster controller caused a much louder noise from the motor of the fan and subsequent research saw other people with the same problem.
I am very happy with the purchase.
I would advise you getting a larger fan than you need and a variac to control the speed. Truely works great.

I have a 6" fan with 6" insulated ducting then 8" insulated ducting over the 6"
also have the fan hanging with bungee to reduce vibration noise and it to is wrapped in insulation. the fan is also connected to a speed controller. Also u could use a duct muffler as desertrat suggested
I prefer centrifugal over squirrel fans

The S&P TD are a combo of centrifugal and axial. Work pretty nice and fairly quiet.
(and to boot, the fan is reversible, just flip it around in it mount, no taking off ductwork.)

go online and check out 6' ecoplus axial fans ill never buy another fancy over priced fan in my life they are all for show, these babies work and are quiet to boot i run my 6" thru my carbon filter and cool tube and i have two of the four inch ones for my assisted intake...if you shop around you can get them for 45.00$ 6"and 27.00 for the 4"..Peace
