I think it is only legit if the person you buy the seeds from is your caregiver.

Well, even then it is illegal federally. So, my point remains: possession and use of seeds is legal for patients and caregivers as far as the state of Maine is concerned. Where you get them isn't really addressed, nor do I think the state cares.
Regarding strains: there is a subforum for strain reviews. Lots of good stuff in there. Kind of a crap shoot thoiugh, really..although I have only had a couple disappointments. Some of my best strains have come from the freebies you get from Attitude with every order. Sign up for their newsletter and watch for a promotion. They have them about every 3 or 4 months for special promos, and monthly specials also.

The law is silent on the issue of patients/caregivers acquiring genetics. Generally speaking, prosectors are reluctant to press charges in such instances. OTOH, it does mean that buying seeds from your caregiver could be less than kosher.

The way I read the law, it is allowed. My lawyer agrees.
Seeds and clones fall under "incidental amount of marijuana".
A primary caregiver may possess up to 2.5 oz of prepared marijuana and an incidental amount of marijuana for each qualifying patient.
A primary caregiver may receive monetary compensation for costs associated with assisting a qualifying patient.
A primary caregiver may recieve monetary compenstaion for the costs associated with cultivating marijuana for a patient.
The law does not specify if the marijuana you cultivate for the patient is "prepared marijuana" or "an incidental amount of marijuana", it just says marijuana, so that covers both cases.

"Incidental amount of marijuana" means an amount of nonflowering marijuana plants and marijuana seeds, stalks and roots defined by rules adopted by the department.
Hash and kief are not legal according to DHHS. I don't agree with them on that, and think it should be counted as prepared marijuana.
Stuff that is curing counts as "harvested marijuana" There is this in the law:
"In addition to the marijuana plants otherwise authorized under this paragraph, a primary caregiver may have harvested marijuana plants in varying stages of processing in order to ensure the primary caregiver is able to meet the needs of the primary caregivers qualifying patients.

Hash and kief are for smoking. Maine's law only allows extraction for purposes of making edibles & tinctures. Important semantics.

I don't smoke.
I use kief and/or dry ice "hash" for making edibles, tintures and ointments.
I have some plants that make kief just from sitting around in a jar. The kief in this picture came from the bottom of a jar.

Whether you smoke or not is not relevant to the question. The point is that if you call your extract hash or kief, it is illegal under Maine's law. If you call your extract a cooking ingredient (and you did the extraction without using noxious chemicals like butane, ISO, or acetone), then it is legal.
