Carbon filter for PC grow?

Hello! I have ordered this setup here The Ultimate Grow Package

I am a bit worried about the smell though.. it comes with ONA gel but I read putting it inside the case can ruin the grow. I would line the exhaust fan with it, but I plan on making a DIY carbon filter using The Best Diy Ez Walmart Carbon Filter for Micro Grows Zen Style method.. though I am not sure if I will still have negative pressure so that the exhaust fan will work right? Or if I will even have enough/more CFM on the exhaust fan so that I can connect the carbon filter and everything will work properly. With the filter on, I dont know where I would put the ONA gel. Definately not on the inside. I may have to make a small ONA control bucket? Not too sure.

The setup uses the fans that came with the PC. Will making the carbon filter and attaching it mess up anything inside the box, or would I have to change/modify something to ensure that the smell will be eliminated?

Well first off ,you may or may not need odor protection.I've never used anything.right now I have 22Ish sativas 11 weeks into flower..it only stinks when they get too hot or the morning..anyway with such a small space I might not worry unless its a super atinky variety... Also Oma works but youhave to replace it and is more expensive than I like.... But simply taping a pack of replacement carbon filters and taping em around a few pencil holders or just mesh would be better than ona

I would rather have a carbon filter than ONA from what I have read. What precautions could I take to ensure that the carbon filter would properly work on the PC tower? Should I attach a second fan to it, increase the exhaust fans speed (though I am not sure how)?

I want to test the system before I start to ensure that everything works properly so I can grow at my best

You want air to flow slowly through the filter to be most efficient. You also want the largest surface area... You want higher cfm exhaust than intake... Possibly even passive intake. Also note that heat rises, put that to use....bout all I van think of right now

I was afraid that in attaching a carbon filter to the exhaust that I would lower the exhausts cfm, causing problems and leakage. What is passive intake? I have tried to search what it is, but I could not understand..

I might make a makeshift A/C and dehumidifier combo to cool the area around the case so it doesnt get too hot in there.

Most people that want their grow completely sealed off run inline ducting fans and obviusly the ducting (dryer tube) and put your filter at the end.. I grow open no filters no nothin, so again you may not need all this...nevertheless, the filter will slow your fans, also standard fans will stall if their is too much pressur...meaning the blades will be spinning but air isn't being moved, you want a circular job site fan/blower. The orientation of the blades act more like a pump..most people think to have air flow you need to pump air in,and while this is somewhat effective.much more important though is removing the air so that it can flow through, this is where a passive intake can be used, it just means have an open intake for air tomove freely through and is pumped out be the exhaust..you want main exhaust above your lights, with possible passive imtakes on opposite sides of the grow to help the plants receive air from all sides, makimg sure the air isn't heating up and blowing across your plants....is their a reason you want a pc grow, and seem to be so worried about smell? In my personal opinion you would do better making like a stacked rubbermaid tote kinda thing...but I'm more diy, and broke. You won't have an exceptional yield with only 4 cfls...if you want ill show you mine.

Interesting.. I will check for ducting. I am adding a second exhaust to my case, near the top, both with a 0.2" active carbon cut-to-fit filter. Im not sure how long the filter will last, or how affective it will be.. but I plan to somehow incorporate ONA gel (might line the fans with it?) and not have it inside my box as to contaminate the grow.

That makes sense about passive intake, thank you for explaning!

I want a PC grow for maximum stealth. I would be better with a stacked rubbermaid, true, and I would enjoy the project more, but I need stealth. What strain would you recomend for a 21"x10"x19" box? I dont want easy or highest yielding, but highest quality that I could get a lot out of with a lot of care.. I was thinking maybe northern lights. Though Im not sure if there is a relaxing strain like kush that also brings a lot of creativity? Ive never researched it

I don't know much about strains.I like growing mexicn sativas.that being said I also grow with cfls and your gonna want a lot of indica to keep the bud dense and reduce stretch and probly try A little scrog or atleast topping her...never personally used ona, the price and replacing it don't work for me.but carbon filters will last a few months. They work good also just put it on the back of a box fan or something, works good if you just like to smoke a lot too

I was thinking scrog or lst. Im not sure what scrog is though, Ill have to research it.. Good to know about the placement though.

I was thinking northern lights or white widow.. maybe both at once? If I grow two plants inside the case that is.. would having two plants in a case, especially different types, mess up their growth?

Edit: maybe subbing white widow for white russian? Not sure..

Yes! Pure sativas will not mix with anything...in about 30min when my plants wake up I'm bout to chop an indica don plant, its bout 18in...I grow pure sativas and with 1 week veg they are 5feet tall..needless to say there was a gross lack of light and will harvest an eigth..my sativas are the size of 2 liter soda bottles.so placement to light source is huge. Again I've never grown seesbank seeds but I would recommend both of those strains actually to any newb. But being with your height restrains I would lean to the indica. You would be happy with any white strain, stay away from all "kushes" they can be very finicky and slow growers low yielding.

Just fim or top an indica hybrid for your first grow, after you see growth patterns and learn how the plants behave then attempt to scrog.

Ill probably top it and LST. 2 plants too much for the space that I have? And again, not sure if having northern lights and white russian in the same box is a good idea or not.. but I dont think it would matter?
