Canadian COBs

Hey gang, I'm looking for some additional options for sourcing COB sets in Canada.

So far I've been speaking with KB Jer, a little worried about the shipping/lead times with him.

I had an account with DigiKey a while back, I may try to re-activate it and see whats up there.

I notice a few of you are doing commercial things, just not sure if you're shipping up north.

Any advice would be appreciated :bigjoint:

I bought my cobs from Digikey in Canada. Seems they have plenty of Vero Gen 7, Citizen and Cree cobs. Mouser.ca sells drivers. Heatsink material is available here too but a bit harder to source. It's extremely cheaper buying here in Canada than it is having to pay the outrageous duty fee's and shipping charges to get stuff delivered here. Might as well add at least 25% more to your total just to have things imported, maybe more depending on how much you're ordering.

If you're looking for pre-built systems the only one I really know of that uses cree cxb3590 cobs and meanwell drivers are These GUYS. Seems they have free shipping also.

for heatsinks i use CPU heatsinks with fans. they seem to do the job and are pretty easy to find.. i have been thinking of using an old water block aswell

don't the cobs have to come from usa and cost pretty much the same[question]

and yes the brokerge fee from ups/fedex etc..is insane

i bought nichia cobs from future electronics in canada and shipping was 7$ and they arrived fast..

if you do order from the US. best thing to do is go with USPS it goes directly to crapida post and the brokerage/other import fees are not so bad. mostly just damn tax. and it depends on how the product is labeled

hmm what we do need is a good Canadian LED light maker that can import parts direct from the manufacture. for instance cobkits.com seems to have retarded low prices. and i think he might have connections with people close to the factory or a wholesaler that doesn't bend him over..

if I had the funding or knew someone id open up shop right now.

Funny I was thinking the exact same thing this morning. Looking at a rather large order from China and $3.5K+ in shipping. I don't even want to know what the tax is going to look like if I pull the trigger.

We should seriously do it.

Hey @CobKits, want to set up shop in Canada? Lots of new facilities popping up here in the next year or so :)
