Can you tell the sex and vigour by the look of a seed??

Bit of a stupid question I know. I bought my friend 3 packs of expensive regs from karma genetics as he’s on a pheno hunt. Get round to his house to see that only a few were actually growing so I asked what happened to the rest of them. He said he can tell from the look of the seed weather it’s going to be good and weather it will be male or female. To me this is completely retarded. Is it retarded or is am I missing something?

Thanks for confirming that stupid question I know just wanted confirmation from a third party. I’ve had small seeds turn out to be amazing and big seeds turn out to bit shit.

Yeah, your friend is a dumb dumb. You can only tell the sex of a plant after you switch the lighting cycle to allow it to show either pistols or balls. There is no other way. I do however pick the fattest darkest seeds for growing if I have the Choice. I find those have a higher percentage of germination rate versus the smaller colorless seeds. So I guess take that for what it is.

dumb dumb indeed he’s got space to veg them for a bit to see if there vigorous or not but he just chucks them in the bin instead. Unbelievable!

There are some people who believe you can tell that sex of a seed by the shape and I read a guy who claimed to be very good at it, looking at hundreds of seeds and being able to pick a high number of females based on shape, more than chance would allow. They could be lying or it could be true. I don’t like to call people idiots about something I haven’t tried myself, so I put this “myth/legend” into the maybe pile.

I promise you are better off Buying feminized seeds and using the clones to create an infinite amount of female plants. You would just be wasting your time money and resources trying to solve old wives tales.

Yea well he’s supposed to be on a pheno hunts so he gets packs of 10 chucks some of them away leaving himself with about 4 male/females to pick a keeper from. Baffles me!

I would be asking for his throwaways assuming he is buying decent genetics, just tell him you're looking for nothing but males for breeding. If you don't have a desire for any new seeds, just sit back and watch an idiot being easily parted from his money.

Imho a seed isnt done being produced until its first bio-assay. Then you can decide its value.

Even "good" looking seeds produce duds.
Heck, to go a step further indicas will produce small and big seeds and so will sativas.

Long read dna sequencing which is just becoming available [so its f'in expensive] so the lazy or huge commercial ops will know more history of the seed....but diehards will still take the time and make sure by growing them out the old fashioned way....

I had a debate about this with a close friend. He is a believer in "sexing" seeds.
Another local grower he knows has "never been wrong"....
I sent him over to "sex" a small batch of my seeds. 20 homemade fem seeds.
He came back with 7 that were definitely male, according to the great seed sexing guru....
Then I told him that I had given him 20 femmed seeds. Priceless.

Sexing seeds?
Hogwash.
