what does the "tds" stand for? so i know what i'm asking for if they dont at the hydro shop....
Total Disolved Solids, its normally used for pools to check chlorine levels and other stuff too. You can then test your ppm before you water and get it perfect every time. then test the run off to make sure the ppm is right. my plants need nutes and water waaaaaay more cause they arent stressed out :bigjoint::bigjoint:

$160! thats insane!!! are you sure? i think i would go without
They are 20-40 bucks on ebay. if you dont have one you are bound to get out of wack. I had mild organic nutrient soil and i fed my plants a couple times with 800ppm mix and i tested it 4 days later when they started dieing and the ppm was at 4500! and it took over 10 litres to get it back to a normal level. its not worth taking the chance in my opinion

yea, 160 is a little too much for a meter... i'll check ebay for the cheaper ones though. thanks to everyone for helping out :)

yea, my ph is checked everytime before i water, since the day i began this particular grow. my bottom fan leaves were turning yellow and dying... i'd cut them when they were completely dead. now it seems as if it's moving up the plant though.... this problem is getting worse and worse daily... lol

You could also check to make sure that your soil isn't restricting absorption by waxy buildup. Poor the water on top, and then check if the soil is actually wet all the way through.
If so add a small amount of detergent and this will allow the water to be absorbed by the soil better.

ok...bought a hannah tds meter off of ebay. hopefully it comes with good instructions, but can someone explain generally how to use it and what i'm looking for? i understand it measures things in ppm. measures amount of solids in the liquid i believe, correct? so there must be a range i should be in, correct? and if i'm out of range, whats the solution?

dude your soil is probably compacted a little take a thin hard object and airate your soil poke holes through the soil just go slow and that will let the water in

just took a stiff metal rod and airated the shit out of the soil. it was rock freakin hard ! after that i mixed up a batch of ph balanced plain water, and she drank the entire gallon before draining. thanks for the tip growman :) that should help with the water situation for a while now. so now i need to focus on the yellowing and dying lower leaves....

you said the plant was 4 weeks into flowering? that would explain the yellowing, the plant uses all the energy from the leaves to make buds, totally ok
