can u crumble brf cakes for casing?

yes you ca, dump the cake into a bag and use your hand to separate it, then case it with dirt on the bottom and dirt on the top. Make sure you have at-least an inch of dirt on the bottom and 3-4" of cake, followed by another inch of dirt. Mist the top keep humid, keep good air exchange and in a few days you will have mycelium growing out the top of the soil. make sure you let it come through evenly. If it is coming through a lot in one spot, spot cover it so it comes through even. then let it get some light and initiate pinning. This is the best way to use cakes imo. Have had very good outcomes, 80-90 gram b+ wet, but a 9g mushie isnt bad. :) also make sure you rehydrate between the later flushes, this will give you a little boost at the end. Brf works very decent for diy mush cultivation.

I have been considering this age old question as well. It seems to me that if you take the brf pftek cakes and add some baking powder while you are standing in bright sunlight without a hat on it will case. My neighbor thinks that crumbling will cause it to not case well but I think he is retarded. One time we had a party and he came over uninvited and kidnapped my miniature donkey named Steve. I didn't realize this until the next morning when I went to feed Steve and noticed he was gone. My nieghbor, in a very drunken state, left Steve in his kitchen and then went to bed. When he woke up he found that Steve had broken his kitchen table, the sink, the door to the refrigerator, a small tv set, and numerous plates and glasses. Steve had gotten into the 'fridge and eaten most of the food and had dumped the rest on the floor and trampled on it. He also took two big dumps during his time in captivity. So you never know.

Just make sure light doesn't get through to the bottom to keep the mushrooms on top. This way u don't have to worry about the early ones to rot under the caseing on the side of ur tray/container. Also instead of crumbling u can break into large chunks

No real point in casing the bottom - it only weakens the entire structure.

right.

now what you saying is ther is no reason to have a layer below the mycelium.

what the op is asking is, whether to case with BRF, if you already have a continer ready to fruit why would you add more mycelium to case with?
in other words your queston was worded wrong,

what you wanted to as is, "can i break BRF cakes up and spawn to bulk?"(then you would case that later once its conlonized)

the answer is yes you can do this. but it is not ideal since the BRF mycleium will spread very slowly from less points than with grain. BRF cakes should really be left as cakes. the best method ive seen and all this recent to me too mostly brushing up on my knowledge for my incoming spores, is to dunk and roll the cakes in vermiculite.

yes you can break up pf cakes and then case but i find this takes longer then leaving them whole. i have been casing my pf cakes last couple grows and the results have been awesome compared to just fruiting the cakes. here is some pics of Z strain and GT cakes. Z first casing on left on first flush and GT is on 2nd or 3rd flush. i got 174g wet on 1st flush of the z strain not bad imo for pf cakes

how many cake a tub are they set vertical. only thing i can think of as a downside is you lose some surface area for fruiting if your putting one whole BRF cake in on its side. but that is pretty impressive for a cased brf cake.

Putting while cakes in a caseing is the way to go, go crazy with the jars and make lots of shrooms. Last run I did 40 jars and turned out way more product then I knew what to do with. Now bulk substrate is another thing. Wait till the right season and make a nice leaf pile and add some cakes or some old fruited trays and have a go. Could turn out great

One thing that you can do if you don't mind adding about 5 days on. And if you want greater yields is to crumble a cake. Put a table spoons worth or more into jars or prepped corn. Wait a few days to fully colonize. And then go to bulk, or straight casing. This will not only increase your yields, but also make the fruit come out really big.

Just a thought.

i was wondering about surface area... whats the difference if ur tray is low and long vs. tall and not as long?

U want a thick mycelium base so a thicker cake base is a must. Plus they won't dry out as fast. I was always told the deeper u can make it the better ur yield will be.
