You can start 12/12 from seed if you'd like, but it's not optimal. Indoors, there are so many variables that must be considered in order to determine the proper length of vegetation. Much depends on the size of the grow area available to you, the method you have chosen to grow with and the equipment being utilized. My grow area is 4 X 4 X 6, so I induce flowering when my plants are approximately 18" tall. At harvest, the plants are roughly double that height, so I still have enough room between my canopy and my bulbs to prevent damage. Personally I would let the plant reach a minimum of 12" before inducing flowering. Yield is directly related to root mass. Hope this helps. Peace.
