can my bonsai mum turn BIG..?

Hello!

My friend gave me a mother plant that is kind of a "bonsai"; it has been growing in a 5 litre container in soil for about 8 months, and now I'd like to let her grow larger (if possible? that's the question..) and then flower her. I've transplanted her into a 30 litre container with superduper soil and she's got stronger light as well now (125w blue esl, changing to 400w metal halide in a week..). So my concern is this: the stems of this little (~50cm in height) lady are really woody and thin and her leafs are tiny, all because of rather inadequate watering and light as well as restricted root space and frequent topping. Can such a plant still develop fully given time? How long will it take for it to start developing full-speed according to the new growing conditions? Or is a plant forever seized in size when the stems have become really woody? :-|

thanks!
