Can I take cuttings from plants that have flowered?

Just had my first relatively successful outdoor grow. I was able to aquire some good genetics for no money. I was thinking of trying to keep those genetics going now that I've seen how they perform in my climate. My question is can I take a cutting from these plants? They are close to or at the end of flowering. I hate to lose these genes and really don't want to buy seed next season just to end up with different results. Thanks for any help.

I haven't cut clones from an outdoor, but I've a) rooted cuttings from a flowering plant and b) re-vegged an already harvested plant.

Here's one I harvested then re-vegged: herb2.jpg

So I'd give it a shot.

I'll tell you on my re-veg, I cut what I wanted, leaving some lower branches and cut the upper half of the plant off. I watered them with some N fertilizer, then left them in complete darkness for 5 days, then turned on 16/8 schedule and over the next 2 weeks they started to sprout new growth.

8/10 plants re-vegged I was surprised.

At this point I wouldn't try to take a clone from a plant so late into flower. I would do what Tumorhead suggested and try to reveg and you could clone from that.

Yes you can but you must put the clone under a 18/6 or higher light schedule to revert it back to the vegetative state. This can take quite awhile, sometimes up to a month. Good luck.

I dont have a problem with 18/6 or more just looking to save these genetics. How long can i keep a plant in veg state, i dont belive either of these strains are auto flower. What else should I do to make this work. All feedback is appreciated.

No need to reveg. Just take a clone from a flowering plant, like from a veg plant. Put under 18/6 and it roots even faster than from a plant that's veggin.

The two strains im dealing with are urban poison and a black indica that was given to me by a friend who is no longer with us. I know that i can just by seed for the urban poison but the indica strain is probably 15 to 20 years old. Just trying to do the right thing.

You can veg a plant forever if you don't shorten the light cycle...

Depending on how long till harvest, I'd probably cut a few ends off the lower branches and try to root them now, and when you finally harvest I'd attempt a re-veg.

To clone you cut the branch at an angle to expose more of it, scrape a little bit of the lower inch of the stem, dip it in rooting powder, and put it in a moist medium that isn't sitting in water. Probably just read up on cloning as they go through all the steps. Big thing is it needs less light, more humidity but not soaking, since there's no roots if you give it too much light it'll kill it.

For re-veg I'd carefully dig around the plant and try to get as much of the root ball without destroying it. Put it in a pot or bucket with holes, harvest most of it, even cut in half, but leave a couple lowest branches with leaves. Then water it with some N to promote growth again, put it in darkness for 3-5 days, then put it under light.

Others will have more experience than me. That's just what I would do.

Cloning it is all well and good but if the clones fail then what. I would reveg it and then take clones off the reveg. reveg takes a while but it's the 1 sure way to save your genetics.

EDIT.. I do not and would not advise you putting it under dark for a couple days. Why is everyone saying put plants into dark for a few days for everything now.
