Weed likes total saturation, then total dry. Without holes, the bottom will NEVER dry out. Think rain Forrest, then when it becomes a desert, turn that bitch back into a rain Forrest. lol

Another great thing about large pots with soil, is the ability to leave for days on end without watering even in hellish conditions. The water takes longer and longer to evaporate the more soil its contained within.

I'm having a heck of a time trying to find a drip tray for a 14 gallon rubbermaid container before I drill holes in it for drainage. The question is, what do drainage holes do other than allowing the extra water left in the catch tray to be absorbed over time? Can I get away without putting drainage holes in my rubbermaid and just let it thoroughly dry out in between waterings?
Why not just buy some 10 or 20 gallon smart pots that already have millions of micro drain holes in them? They are fairly cheap as well. Just my thought. Be safe and live life everyone.

I've done my own side-by-side comparison between smart pots and containers, and while I didn't see bigger plants or better yields, I did see my soil seem to be consistently the right moisture. I have not tried the 30 gal variety, but will assume the same results would happen. It's almost impossible to over-water with a smart pot.
