Can Filter 9000 Not working well?

I'm growing 6 different strains in a GL 80 tent with a 400w light. The plants are super healthy and around 14" tall. I'm only 1 week into flowering. I have a can filter with a 4" can-fan exhaust fan. ( see setup below ) Everything is sealed perfectly. No holes anywhere other than the passive intakes at the bottom. I'm growing in my condo and when I get home I can smell my plants. Its not so strong that neighbors can smell it but it very noticable when you walk in my place. I have properly sealed everything on the filter and hoses connections. I also taped up the gap directly on the can fan itself because I though it may be sucking in odor directly and out of the room. All my products are brand new and less then 3 months old. I'm concerned because once budding starts Its really going to be an issue. I have bought a ona block and place it on the outside of the tent near the exhaust. This has helped but I figured the Can filter was going to take care of all the odors.

Other details. My temperature stays around 76 degrees. My humidity stays around 40. My exhaust fan stays on 24/7

Has anyone ever heard of this? or is it normal to still have some odor when using a filter? Any additional information would be greatly appreciated

You need adjustable duct elbows. I think you need 3.

is your exhaust just running out of the tent or do you have running out of the house, attic, basement?
It looks to me like it is setup the same way that they show in the manufacture instructions. You are sucking the air from inside and blowing it out the tent. What i wonder is if there is to much CFM flow through the filter? From what I have read, you need to have a certain amount of CFM so that the air isnt sucked out to quickly, and that you also have enough serface area on the filter.

I was reading that someone else was having problems i with heat with the GL80 and a 400 watt HID. You dont seem to be having that, and it doesnt appear you are cooling the light, so I would assume you are sucking a good amount of air out of the tent.

Do you have a speed controler?

Also what do you think of the "Can-Fan", how is the noise?

That's a good point. The Can-Fan is 142 CFM and I have NOT added a speed control to it. The outside of the room stays around 75 degrees and the inside of the tent has always been around 77 degrees ( Heat has never been an issue ) I'm running a 400 HID inside a LumenAire 6" hood with glass. I am not cooling the hood. I purchased it that way just incase heat might of been an issue. The can-fan itself is super quiet. When the air come rushing out of the exhaust hole it makes a little noise almost but not quite as loud as a bathroom exhaust fan... I am just venting directly into the main room, its not connected to outside exhaust.

Like I told you in the PM, I have no re world experience with your situation, but i was reading some where else that a guy had a GL80 with 400 watt HID and his out side room temps where 70-72, and the tent was getting around 85-88, this person had a small clip on fan in the tent but no exhaust.

Now it sounds like the inside temps of your tent are almost the same as the outside, so I would assume you are running that fan to fast, but i will be very interested in seeing what the temps do if you slow if down. Please let us know!

I also took your advice and checked the Filter rating for the Can Filter 9000 and its 118 CFM. Which tells me that my fan is puling to fast and your theory is probably 100% correct. The same website stated that the filter should control 99.5% of the odors. Also, I just unplugged the exhaust fan to see what it does. The inside tent temp is 78 degrees. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for you help.

Its been one hour and now the inside temperature reads...82 degrees. I'll keep it off for another hour to see what the temperature reads...

I wish someone with some experience would help us out here, but it seems to me that tells us there was a lot of air flow in the tent, probably to fast for the filter, and that is why you have the smell, I would assume.

What do other people do to cool there smaller grow tents? It seems to me that most air cooler reflectors are 6in, and some of the tents, like the GL80 that Hummbling is using has 4 inch exhaust ducts. Would this be a better way to hook it the venting system?

Do you think that it would have been best to run a 6 inch filter, like the Can33 and then run the light in line with the ducting?
So like:
Filer-->Duct-->Light-->Duct-->Reducer(6in to 4in)-->Fan-->Ducting out.

Or do you not need to run air past the light if you are able to cool by just having negative pressure?

Hope we get a response!!

Anyone? have real live experience with this? Thanks!

I would put a 6 inch to 4 inch duct reducer on the carbon filter and then run 6 inch ducting for everything
I have my setup like this:

6" inline fan<---6" ducting<----400w HPS light<----6" ducting<----6" to 4" duct reducer<----- carbon filter

I hope that makes sense. I have awesome negative pressure with this setup

I've been having odor issues with my scrubber as well. My setup goes: Scrubber inside of room>6"duct>6"inline fan>6" duct> 1000w HPS> 6"duct.

Is your scrubber inside of your growroom or out? Mine is inside and the fan pulls through the scrubber and then pushes through the light and out of the room. It helps but there is definitely still odor issues during flowering.

Mine is inside my flowering box with the exhaust fan pulling through it
I made my own carbon filter and am only now after about 8 months of use am starting to have some smell issues
I need to replace the carbon soon

How many cfm's is your fan? Mine is like 425 and it may be too much. If I get a bigger scrubber will it work better with the fan I have?:joint:

I have a 306 CFm inline fan
A bigger scrubber would probably work better
What is the filter that you are using now rated for?

I honestly don't know. When I got it the lady at the hydro shop said the scrubber I got would work with my fan. She gave me a deal on it because it was missing some shit (the box had been opened). The scrubber is actually very small and designed for the hydro hut I believe. I've had it for about 6 months and it seemed to work o.k. at first. It definitely reduced the odor but not sufficiently. I think I'm going to just buy another one and do my own research instead of relying on a salesperson. She has never steered me wrong before so I trusted she knew what she was talking about. Oh well. Live and learn. :weed:

You guys have it right. The air moving through the charcoal needs a pre-determined amount of hang time in order to be absorbed into the charcoal itself. The filters work well to control odor but the one thing that the manufacturer can not control is what fan we use to move air through the filter.
In a grow tent the ducting is usually very short so the drop in cfm is low. Compared to an indoor setup where the cfm rating of a given fan can be reduced significantly.
Bottom line is your fan is moving more air than the filters rating. I would suggest rather than adding a fan control upgrade to the proper filter. Your temps are right where they need to be so in my opinion upsizing your filter would be a better approach. My reasoning is that when the outside temps climb your inside temps will stay cooler.
I am running a 12" max with a 12" x 39" Phresh Filter with about 25' of duct and I am borderline. I am considering buying another filter and adding a Y to run Two filters off the same fan.
Hope this helps.
