Can cobs be used as side lighting

I have 3 meter by 2 meter tent that's difficult to scrog so I use large trellis , it works well with the 5 HP's and one mh in the centre apart from heat issues (waiting on tastyled for cobs) associated, but I end up with some smaller buds at the bottom even after I trim, so was wondering about fitting side lights to the perimeter hoping to use cobs but don't know if they operate on there side, or should I settle for cfl or some "Mars hydro" type bs, or lower wattage hps using air cooled hud\ cool tube

there was a good sized grow doing that with pics and he did really well. Don't recall the user name...was early on when cobs first came out. Someone else doing it now with the area 51 cobs..greensantas grow?

I'd do it if my space allowed...probably aim for a high efficiency cob and not too much power. Might hurt the gpw dedicating too much power to the lower canopy. Maybe start with a little and work up the side lighting after you see how it goes..

no experience with that myself, just what I've seen

I should of mentioned I'm not paying for electric here so that's no issue, that being said would it change your opinion, thxs for the reply

I use Cree LED lightbulbs and PAR38 spots/floods from Home Depot. I'm growing a plant right now using the lightbulbs. I really like these. In a larger space, the 18w PAR38s would be better (flood if closer to the plant, spot if there's some distance). Otherwise, I like the 9.5w lightbulbs for tighter spaces.

The trick is rigging up the sockets to mount/aim them. The first two links have ideas about that. I'm working on a PVC UFO to hold 4-5 PAR38s for top lighting in a shorter tent.

all guessing on this for me...but in that case I'd just use the same power you use on top than. Kinda depends on beam angles and stuff. area 51 seems to hit a wide angle at 70w or something..don't know the exact specs. The tasty leds have a lens so probably tighter beam..bit farther away setup

Best to just ask the light company what they recommend..most of these new cob guys know their lights better than anyone and how they'd need to be arranged

If you have empty space around the outside I don't see why some side lighting wouldn't work. Retail LEDs are so intense I don't think it will be practical to go that route. DIY strip lights or T5s would probably be the way to go.

I dunno rahz..coming from 600w I don't think strips or t5s would produce anything he wants..

wish I remembered the grow with the full power side lighting. It was impressive..

@Rahz with the way your lights are designed, it would be real easy to use one unit on the edge pointing inward at a 45 degree angle. In fact Your hanger loops are perfect for that.

Side lighting with cobs is doable and it works. My lighting has evolved over the years from mostly monos to mostly cobs. I use 3500k Cree CXA1304, 9v version for the side lighting. There are 96 of them in all. I run them at 350ma max with dimmers. Each level is it's own dimmable, switched driver so I can adjust the intensity of each level as needed. Because the whole plant gets lit up the lower buds do get bigger. I also remove the older, bigger leaves that tend to block the light from the bud sites throughout the flower cycle. This setup is 2x3'. It typically yields ~12oz.
