California judge order sex change to proceed

(Reuters) - A federal judge in San Francisco on Thursday ruled that California must provide sex reassignment surgery to a transgender inmate, calling denial of the procedure a violation of constitutional rights.

U.S. District Judge Jon Tigar wrote in his 38-page order that the state was violating the constitutional rights of Michelle-Lael Norsworthy, who was convicted of second-degree murder in April 1987, by not providing
the operation.

I think this is silly. No, the state does not have to pay for a snip-tuck, but should allow the inmate to go through with the procedure, so long as they (the patient) can pay for it. Even then, I'm on the fence of even allowing them to have the procedure while incarcerated, no matter who pays for it. Incarceration needs to mean something.

It does appear the judge in California has confused the persons right to get a sex change operation with the idea that the person somehow has a right to insist others pay for it. Which of course would violate the rights of the persons paying for it.
i think you are just using your philosophy as a veneer for your bigotry yet again.

why does he deserve to be treated like he's not even a human just because he has a gender identity issue?

I said as long as I don't have to pay for any of it I'm fine with it.
how do you feel about the fact that schizophrenic prisoners get meds for their psychosis on your dollar as well?

is that more OK since it is not a gender identity issue?

should we treat anyone convicted of a crime as less than human, less deserving of rights?

should we subject people with mental illnesses or gender identity issues to cruel and unusual punishment?

is that what is so good about america?

OK, so we have one vote for stripping away all mental health protections for criminals, thereby making prison more dangerous and subjecting these people to cruel and unusual punishment, against the word of the constitution and the principles upon which america was founded.

gender dysphoria is a condition listed in the DSM-V, just like schizophrenia or any other mental health condition which requires treatment.

to single this out and make a thread about it, or to come into this thread with such fierce hostility, is truly an easy way to identify bigots.

Nah, you should punish those who have nothing to do with the situation instead. Oh, and give the government more power to throw more people in jail please. Because it's what's needed.
