Calibrate your pH pens!

Just wanted to throw this friendly reminder out there that even if you think you are PH'ing your water, if you are not calibrating your pen often, or storing it properly your pH could be way off without you knowing.

I've seen so many people looking for answers to their plant problem that's clearly a pH issue and saying that pH is not an issue because they pH their water so it has to be something else. When in reality it is your pH. So you end up getting advice to fix a problem that's not your true problem and it compound your issues.

Calibrate your pens people!

I was just coming to search up peoples experience with this as I've just had my own!

After a long break from growing (20+ years) I am back, and bought myself a BluePen with calibration and storage solution. I calibrated successfully, and the BluePen has a check mark on the display that disappears when it is time to recalibrate. Coming from liquid test kits and litmus paper, I blindly trusted the check mark.

I started noticing some "CalMag Issues", so I watered in some extra calmag ph'd to 5.8. Still nothing, some mild flushing with plain PH'd water, more CalMag still nothing, but still ph of 5.8.

Finally the check mark disappeared and I re-calibrated, and tested my premixed nutrients. Turns out I was watering with a PH of around 5.It also looks like Ca and Mg will be one of the first things to lock out at low PH so at least my diagnosis might have been right even if the cause was wrong. The more you know!

Calibrate early, calibrate often.
