CA Downgrading Marijuana Possession Of Ounce Or Less To An Infraction

I was just about to post a link about this news. As a staunch opponent to Prop 19 I am very excited about this action. I think this creates a very reasonable compromise between the current medical laws and the intended benefits of Prop 19. This new action can serve as a reminder to the Prop 19 supporters that we do not have to turn the industry over to commercial enterprise in order to progressively lower the punishment for possession and consumption.

Thank you Schwarzenegger, and still as always, NO on Prop 19!

I was originally supportive of the measure - emailing the governor in support and cheering its passage. Now, though, I'm starting to worry.

What this bill really did was turn a $100 misdemeanor into a $100 ticket - for which you have no right to a trial by jury. This means that the cost to the state of writing tickets for marijuana possession just dropped dramatically. How many of us have been caught for possession in CA only to have the cop look the other way? Don't expect that to happen again.

If I didn't have my med card I'd think twice about smoking in public now - especially at clubs and concerts where you're easy prey. They could walk up to a group of smokers and make thousands off tickets in one easy swoop.

Am I being paranoid?

Also - I'm pretty sure the only reason the Governator signed it was to try to trick people into thinking Prop. 19 was no longer needed. It was a great PR stunt.

if u didnt want it to be commercialized then go to your local dispensaries and tell them to STOP TAKING ADVANTAGE OF PATIENTS!. charging street prices for a product that your selling to HELP sick people is BULLSHIT.

remember, people are wanting it legal so that those 'donations' go to a good cause to fix our state, NOT help fatten some stingy families wallet.

I don't agree, what it did is stop putting people in jail for something that harms nobody. I can get another $100, but freedom is priceless. Yeah, it does kind of give cops a way to f with you if they want to, but what really stops them now? Or am I the only guy that gets pulled over just because of how I look?

It's not the solution, but it's a step. We still need to keep working on it, but we'll get there. So far everything in the discussion, whether good or bad, has been based on conjecture. Pot usage will go up, crime will go up, up becomes down, cats and dogs in meaningful relationships... But if people can show that they can handle it, not get stupid, not sell to kids, there will be no negative statistics to post, we can show that we can handle our lives and our nome, and without the bad it will be hard to hide the truth.

This won't keep non-medical growers or sellers from going to prison. This won't end marijuana descrimination.

It's a start ... but Prop 19 ends all the nonsense that is prohibition.

I agree on 19. I think it will actually make the micro grows more popular. Anyone can go get a box of wine, but people who know wine go for the good stuff. I'm looking forward to being able to provide elite strains. I'll donate a grow or two a year for free medicine, but it would be cool to provide some high end, boutique type products for the weed snobs. No more criminals to deal with, just lovers of the hobby. A chance go show it can be handled responsibly and with minimal negative impact to society.

perfect example of how the market *could* work if all the home growers were optomistic about the future.

and to you growers, guys i know you think this is bad, and you guys are SO used to living that fearful life of growing lots of plants and providing for the blackmarket 'medical fake shops'. afraid because of how the feds and DEA crack down so hard on grow ops and the negative impact society has given pot. i know you guys have that "ITS A TRAAAP" mentality. and thats perfectly fine. but you guys are no different then vast amounts of wine dispensaries in central CA. if you guys end up having to take a small dip in your revenue, then whats really wrong with that? you guys are SUPPOSED to be growing and providing for the love of pot, for the hope that your product is being specifically chosen over others by people who need it. you should feel honored!!
