A Friend and I have decided to grow plants outdoors. This is our first grow ever, so we're kinda new to the whole ordeal. I was wondering how big of a threat Animals and Bugs are. While we were digging holes, we found lots of Ants. Could this be detrimental to the whole project?

Any tips are GREATLY appreciated
 
They were weird little red ants, I was worried about them, along with other animals, these plants are in a wooded area, so there are Animals all over
 
Bump....this is an Emergency, The plants have only been outside for one night, and there are deer tracks all over. There not eating them, just nearly trampling them. We need good tips fast.
 
best thing i've heard of to keep deer off/away from plants is fishing line tied from tree to tree. they say to start it at about 3 ft. moth balls is also supposed to work well,for lots of animals, sprinkled around the vicinity. hope this helps!:peace:
 
well if you would search the forums you would find loads of info about how deer are deterred by surrounding the grow site in human urine, human hair as well as planting rosemary around the site. Or you could just ensure no deer come in by making a simple four post fence with chicken wire or even fishing line, just something to keep them out.
 
Thanks for the tips, I've been peeing around the site as frequently as possible, And I'll try the Fishing Line Tonight.
 
ya just make a fence around the plants. its really kindof an obvious answer. if you fence off your plants then nothing can get to them.
 
well, A fence would be an obvious answer, however we don't really want people knowing we have these. And since fences are pretty easy to spot, that's already out, its either fishing line, or fox urine, possibly mothballs
 
We layed the whole area down with mothballs....the whole area reeks, but hopefully this should keep small critters away? I hope to upload photos soon
 
Hi mate. personally the biggest threat I have to my outdoor grow are rabbits. I ringed each plant with chicken wire, its the only way! Unfortunately, 14 out of 15 were attacked because I did'nt make it high enough. The plant that was left was ringed higher, about two foot. If you do it at two foot you wont have any problems with rabbits. I think for deer you will need to fence off the entire area with chicken wire. This will keep rabbits at bay too. The fence will obviously need to be higher as well. Peeing around the plants keeps herbivores away for about a week and fish, blood and bone will help too. Chicken wire is essential though, dont rely on scent deterrants alone!
 
Hey thanks Manhattan, we did Put up some line because one plant has thus far been trampled, we're not sure if it'sa gonna make it though. Theres a deer trail coming through the area, they don't really notice the plants, they just accidently trample on them. If this doesn't work, we're camping outside for a day and shooting anything that moves, piling the bodies, and burning them.....hahaha

simple simple simple answer to your problem. same situation as you, dam rabbits and deer all over. didnt want a fence that can be spotted sooo... go to home depot get one of the plastic 1 inch square fences that roll up. simple to cut and line around your area as well as only being 8$ roughly plus the green will blend in quite well if its in the woods

Don't use the fox urine you mentioned earlier. Hunters use it to mask their scent. A fox is rarely seen by people because of it's elusive nature, so if a deer smells fox urine, it will assume that this is somewhere the fox frequents. If a fox frequent the area, then the deer will feel comfortable, since foxes prefer secure (little human activity) areas. You do not want the deer to feel comfortable in your grow area!
This is a problem in the best grow areas, where deer are present, because you and the deer are both looking for secure areas with no human activity. I look for deer bedding areas, if they are comfortable enough to take up residence, then I feel comfortable kicking them out and using their beds as plant beds.
If you are a hunter, you can freeze a few bags of guts and put a few pounds of them in the vicinity of your grow every few weeks. Nothing I know of will discourage deer traffic better than a pile of their cousin's guts. If you don't hunt, bag up some fresh road-kill. An added bonus is that most people also avoid the smell of rotting flesh, so it serves to discourage cops, thieves, and hunters. Makes maintenance a little more challenging, depending on which way the wind is blowing!
Fox piss would be good for rabbits, though.
 
Great advice Johnny, We hunt occasionally, so we could go kill some stuff, and pile some bodies. Good nutrients too maybe? haha
