Bubbler cloner

i was looking at one of these 300 dollar nothings in the hydro store......simple set-up do u leave the air stones on all the time? or on a timer? i take it this would work for seeds aswell.........

To answer your air stone question, YES you must leave the air stones on to air rate the water. This serves two things, #1: supplies sufficient amount of oxygen to the roots and #2: mixes up your nutrients better in the water so you don't get stagnant water. You also can use seedlings in the cloner, I've done that. Once you have enough roots coming out of the rock wool and a couple of nodes I would transplant the plant into another system where you will finish the plant's life cycle out.

It is very disheartening to see that so many companies are putting these hydroponic devices together and raping this wonderful comminity with the outlandish prices they charge. Paying three hundred dollars - hell, paying more than $30-$40 US dollars - for something which can easily be constructed at home in about an hour is highway robbery.

The airstone's main purpose is to create bubbles that splash up to creat moisture for the roots, hence the name. You will get roots faster if the splashing of the water is constantly stopped, allowing the stems to partially dry. A good cycle is 30 minutes on, 60 off.

I would advise against paying that much for any kind of cloner. They are extremely over priced. Run a search in the Hydro section for aero cloner or bubble cloner. Mogie has pasted a few good posts from past growers that are very helpful in making cloners and how to use them effectively.

I got roots in three days last time with my home made aero cloner. Couldn't have done it with out those posts.

I've used a home-made bubbler cloner for years and get a 100% success rate on my clones. Splifman is correct ... the airstones purpose, besides introducing oxygen into the water, is to have bubbles bursting just below the net pots. The solution should be within 1/4 inch from the bottoms of the net pots and the timer 30 on and 60 off is fine.

You can build your own for just a small amount of money. Just go to WalMart and buy:

One small tub with the lid.
One, dual outlet air pump (aquarium dept.)
Two 12" Air Stones (aquarium dept.)
One package of clear air line. (aquarium dept)
One timer (electrical dept.)

Go to the hydro store and buy:

One slab of 1" RockWool cubes.
Twenty 2" net pots.

Drill (with a hole saw) as many 1 7/8 inch holes as you can in the lid.
Drill two small holes in the side of the tub, as close to the top as you can.
Place the AirStones in the bottom of the tub. (You can affix them with double sided tape.)
Run the clear air lines from the pump, through the small holes, then connect them to the Air Stones.
Connect the pump to the timer.
Fill the tup with your solution so that its right under the net pots.
Plug in the timer.
Place clones into the RockWool, then into the net pots, then into the top of the lid.
Keep topping up the solution level.
Wait as long as 10 days to two weeks to see roots. Some will show much sooner than this though.

That's about it ... and you have maybe $30 invested.
