Bubble hash flavor: does it make a difference in how you stir it?

I’m trying bubble hash again today. The first two times it has come out tasting really awful. My husband has to put something over his nose when I smoke it so he doesn’t have to smell it. That’s how bad it is. I made sure it didn’t mold, so that isn’t the problem. I followed the instructions from You Tube and posts from this forum, other forums and Google……So, I’m wondering if it’s in the stirring.

One way (or several) is to manually do it with dowels or a wooden spoon. We started the first batch with a wooden spoon, and it was labor intensive, and didn’t ‘bubble’, so we didn’t feel we were getting it good enough, so used a hard paddle type end on a drill.

The other way we did it was a paint tool with a soft tip on the end of a drill on slow speed.

Does doing it with a drill, as in faster, get it beat up too fast and get too much chlorophyll in it making it taste bad?

any help would be appreciated, as I don’t want another month with foul tasting hash after all that work!

My guess is inferior product going in
I personally don’t use leaves or anything but buds and sugar leaves
If you beat it do death you will get to much plant matter as you should be trying to harvest unbroken trichs
One thing I would offer to try is by a pound of dry ice available in most big box grocery stores and make some hash with that
It is easy to overshake there too
I hope you find your way
I guess I should ask cause I assumed you have bubble bags?
they work great for both hash processes and I never smoke anything out of the first two of five bags
It goes into edibles pile

1. The product I’ve been using is a year old. I’m using the stuff I just harvested to smoke. I’ve still got well over 30 oz left from last year :-o…it was a good year!, but now it’s pretty crispy. this year was a pretty poor year as I had early flowering (when the NON AUTOFLOWER plants) flowered at 8-12” tall, and four died, one only grew to 2 1/2 ft, and all but one grew very short w/1 point leaves & buds all the way up the stems…only averaged 1.5 oz per plant on one strain due to it. Harvest was a b*tch with all those leaves with less product….no way will I throw out the old….so, the new sits waiting for next year, as I only smoke very little. Most of it is hash & tincture. I’m ill & use it for nausea & sleep.
As far as edibles, I am prediabetic & can’t eat sweets & don’t cook, so I was told it was all right to smoke the stuff in the 120 & 160 bags…..so, I have been putting it all together. I’ll not even use the 160. Don’t have a 90, so.

2. Maybe we’ll try the dry ice next time. We’re in a very small town & I don’t think we can get it here, & are doing it this afternoon.

3. We’ll try just stirring this time (we’re also trying fresh frozen this time, so we won’t know about the ‘old’ stuff until next time). But, we’ll find out about stirring vs the drill.

4. I guess i answered the rest in #1 :-P.

I sure appreciate you sharing your experience, and you didn’t ramble. I did ;).

Just keep a small cooler in the vehicle in case you happen upon a dry ice distributor
I have the same aversion to bin old too
But at some point ya have to bite the bullet

Well, color me blushed :oops:. I watched one (or far too many) videos! I think in one of them they mentioned the bubbles made while stirring, and that stuck in my mushy brain :p. I don’t get out as I’m too ill and have been for nearly thirty years, so the last time I smoked socially, I doubt bubble hash even existed .
Thanks for correcting that. I appreciate it. Still learning in my older age anyway .

No wonder the video we watched this morning that we thought was the best (as in we used our common sense…..go figure), he used a spoon, and less ice, and didn’t beat it to death……and barely bubbled…and, the crazy guy was beating his like he was killing it!

And, what I’ve made never bubbles when I put a flame to it. I ‘followed instructions’ from some other videos (and some forums), and after it dried, I flattened it out with a rolling pin filled with hot water. Then, was told that may not be the way to go, but to leave it chopped up.
I don’t think I want to press it this time, but leave it after I grate it, as that looks like it’ll dry better.

Who knows; I sure don’t.

Thank you for all of your help. Between this and that decent video with common sense, we’re doing it right now with a wooden 4 foot piece of thin clean pole (to give leverage) instead of anything with a drill to be gentler with the trichomes.

It’s going great and looking good, too!

Good idea on the cooler. thanks

I can’t really ‘bite the bullet’ ;), as in only keep the new stuff, because I smoke .3-.4 gms of hash a night to sleep, which uses it up pretty fast now. I used to use less, and thought it was doing well, but due to so much pain, I was waking up 3-4am, after turning in at midnight, not able to go back to sleep due to the pain… just not enough, so I upped it to .3gms a night. Now, my main pain medication that I’ve been taking for over 30+ years has been discontinued, and it can’t be taken with other pain meds, so I’m having to reduce it to almost nothing before I can start the new one….and, once I get down to almost nothing, the pain will be intolerable. I’ve already upped it to .4gms and may need to up it more. I don’t dare thin out my cannabis now! Otherwise, if it is the old stuff tasting bad, maybe I’ll just start making hash out of the new crop one time and the next time the old stuff *I’m also terrible at throwing things out in the first place anyway :p; not a hoarder, but recycle anything I can; use things until they just plain can’t be used anymore, etc.

So, we’ll see. But, I really doubt I’ll be biting the bullet. ,,,when I mentioned it to my husband (he doesn’t even use cannabis at all), he said “WHAT? THROW IT OUT??” we’re a bit alike in that regard ;).

I've washed bud that was sitting out for a year and it was really tasty. Could just be the strain you're growing. Like @JimmiP said, Frenchy's method is the best imo and a walmart mini washing machine is $70 compared to the $200 unit marketed for "hash" making. Less ice, colder water, gentle agitation followed by a few washes ( i do 12 washes at 30 seconds to start going only as long as 2 minutes towards my last washes)
You do not need a machine but may want one if you find you like hash and are interested in following Frenchy's method. The most important part is to not use too much ice or stir too hard.

We finally learned about not using too much ice. SO many videos out there, and the first ones I watched did have a lot of ice…too much, so the first two times, we used too much ice, making it hard to stir, causing us to use the drill with a soft tipped paint stirrer. But, the four foot wooden dowel we used yesterday was much easier on the mix. We used fresh frozen, so it’ll be different. It was lighter in color.

I appreciate knowing your ‘older’ bud turned out all right :). I’ve got a lot of it, and hoping my next batch will taste good with this method. I do think we’ll try the washer….we’re ‘old folks’, and I’m too weak to stir, so my husband who doesn’t even get to use any cannabis, has to do it all….yup. Sounds like a good idea. And I’ll look into the Walmart version.

The washer is soooo nice, you will love it. You can add a lot of material and your arm will never get tired :-P Go for the walmart brand , you will not notice a difference. It's all about the vortex spin the machine creates which knocks off the trichs.

Ice is meant to cool your water, not knock trichs off. I leave my water out overnight ( i only run hash in the winter, I'm in New England) and just add enough ice to stay at 32°/33° throughout the process.

I've never run 100% ff. I've run some FF with dried before and it came out really nice. Let us know how it turns out!

I havent read the all the posts yet, but how do keep dry ice in a regular cooler without it breaking to bits?
I've always used a cardboard box and then stuffed every inch of empty space with towels to keep the air from getting at it.

220 and 190 to catch the trash. Then 160, because sun grown plants, taken to the finish line, have some big, beautiful trichomes. I love what shows up in the first wash.
Then sometimes the 120 and /or the 72.
Then the 45. The 25 I leave in the catch basin in a bucket with no bottom. In fact all bags have their own 5gal bucket with no bottom. And they are all stacked together on a metal grate above the 25 bucket and the basin.

I usually buy ten pound blocks they take a long time to break down about $35
