Bridgelux EB Gen 2 Thermals

I have multiple panels of 8x 560mm 3500K Gen1 EBs that run at 1050ma.
From a cold start the total circuit voltage is 190, at full operating temperature it gets less than 1 volt of droop.
They are held together on a 2'x2' sheet of aluminum flashing, that I suppose acts as some minimal sort of "heatsink" ....
That being said, I have zero reservation about running them completely naked at 1050ma, the panels are in perpetual use, so I just never bothered to remove the flashing to test 1050 naked....
Its cheap, easy to source, cuts well with basic shop scissors, and it works great.

I'll dig out an old thread but Im not sure about one thing.

If 700mA on 560mm strips are ok to be run w/o any heatsinks , then are 1120mm strips ok to be run @1400mA without them ?

The nominal test current of the 1120mm is still 700ma, running them at 1400ma would be the max....I doubt they would fail, but they would lose efficiency. Cant say for sure, I've never maxxed a naked one....
1120mm strips are basically 2x 560mm strips, in a series connection, on a single unit.

I have a few lights using each kind of strip, i run them naked at these currents:
  • 280mm at 10W or 550 ma
  • 560mm at 20W or 1050 ma
  • 1120mm at 40W or 1000 ma
I know they can go higher, but i like to keep it safe.

what temps ? for 1120mm You are getting ?

At 24C ambient, i'm getting 64C (measured right at the chips) after being on for 1 hour without any airflow. I just put it inside a closet turned it on and let it run for an hour.

Obviously the temperatures are much lower if there's airflow...
 
I am not natively English speaking(European) and I can't figure out what aluminium flashing is, I am also building a 12(or 14) * EBgen2 520mm build driven by a HLG-320H-C1050B driver.

What is the difference between a plain aluminium sheet(2mm thick for example) and aluminium flashing?
My best guess is that aluminium flashing is some sort of standard size aluminium sheet for some particular usage whatever it might be.

How do you measure temps right on the diode?
Infrared thermometer?
If so, what efficacy?

One thing definitely worth mentioning in this thread, is many of us who are using the EB series both Gen1 or Gen2 especially, I think we would all agree that Bridgelux has modestly UNDERRATED the performance of these emitters on paper.....

The thermal imaging shared here ought to be enough evidence to confirm that notion, IMO.

You are absolutely right.
When I first read thru this thread while debating on Bridgelux or Sammy, I was amazed at all the data you’ve provided and proven.
These strips are the shizznit.

The flashing I just looked at is 0.25mm thick. It's used for roofing etc.

I have Sammy strip rigs too, they also kick serious arse…. The BXEB is the low current winner, capable of running without dedicated thermal management cost.... Photon for Photon vs $ for $, they are aren't much different, outside of thermal management costs, and actual PHYSICAL durability.... One really cant go wrong with either option, in smallish spaces!

not sure where you are getting 5$ prices for 18ft u channels (perhaps lower width) but for me, 2 inch width u channels with 8ft length was 20-25$!!!!! multiply that by 20 and suddenly im pretty sad.

came into DIY to save money, slowly realizing the $ save is dwindling with each new expense :P

edit: just figured out what flashing meant, just a giant aluminum foil with more rigidity. How do you make sure the entire thing doesnt just start folding over? or do the strips/channels actually give it enough structure?
Don’t buy U channel buy angle. It’s less then half the price. I got 1-1/4 aluminum angle for $1.66 a foot works good

And are you placing it on the tC point or literally just between diodes?
it's a Digital Thermometer with a metal pole that i taped with kapton literally right in between 2 diodes. Close to the tc point, but not right on it.

Have you tested temp while driving them at max? 700/1400/1400

Quick question.
Forgive me if this in in the wrong thread (new to growing, and web forums)

I am looking at adding some more lighting to my 4 x 2 flower closet to supplement 250w @ the wall of Chinese warm white led.
(Roleadro 300wX2)

Planning on adding 2pcs x 1foot bx eb2 strips each side of my existing lights on outriggers (8 per light-16 total)

Just really looking for confirmation that my driver choice will work with my strip choice.

Not planning on any heat sinks and hopping I can run them at close to 350ma @19.5v in parallel with the listed components.
