Breeding Question

Ok, so even though I work as a biochemist, and have an MS, I am embarrassed to admit I am horrible when it comes to genetics, so maybe someone here can help me.

I have some good genetics that I bought off the 'bay and the 'boo, and am interested in preserving them.

Say for example I have a ten pack of BOG's sour bubble (bought in fall of 2009), and I germ all ten seeds. If I take the best female of the bunch, and pollinate it with the best male of the bunch, what exactly will the offsrping be? F2's?? Or will they just be seeds with unstable genetics because I crossed two parents of the same strain...

F-1 is the first cross....1/3rd will favor mother, 1/3rd with favor father 1/3rd will be F2 seed or the genetic combination your want. After you select best looking plants...inbreed from there F3, F4 and so on. At F1 seeds will be unstable, hermies, etc.

its really unsure what your going to get most good breeders take precautions for ppl try to make copys of there hard work. it whould take time and know how for sure, too hard to try to explan here...you can clone the best female and keep doing backcrosses untell you get whats close anuff to what you want. check out a book called "cannabis breeders bible" and or "marijuana botny" they both have really good info on the subject.

Time consuming is right Meangreens. To do it right you really need to breed at the commercial level. A lot of labor intensive work.
But, by the same token breeders have you by the gonads for good seed stock each growing season...same same Monsanto

Thanks...

I didnt think there would be an easy answer...I have done this with Sour LifeSaver, and ended up with a pheno that is quite good, but nowhere near the original.

Just Curious:

"most good breeders take precautions for ppl try to make copys of there hard work"

What kind of precautions?

BTW, just to be clear, not interested in stealing someones work, just trying to get myself set up with good seedstock so that i dont have to send away for seeds ever again.

one way is they dont release IBL on to the market. they release F1's and make sure the homozygous recessive traits breed true in those F1's..so all the seeds that are growen out will look like true breeding plants for what ever said trait/s. but if crossed brother to sister (F2) you whould get other traits and phenotypes poping up..you whould have clone and keep all the plants (male & female) you got from what ever breeder and do test crosses with them to see what you get..keeping records and growing out 100s of seeds..untell you find out what plant has what dominant/recessive traits..
yeah i know your not try to "steal" someones work just letting you know they take crazy ass precautions..but should be very easy and fun to cross what ever you got and see what you get..those books ^^^have lots of good info if your really intersted in the subject.

To anser your original question MTBAZZ, the seeds you will get will be alright, some plants will be good, but there will also be a considerable number of poor genetics, as those seeds are considered F1's the product of two F1s will be F2's. These F2's will display a variety of traits, due to the inbreeding it is likely that recessive traits will be prominent in many seeds. but this is not a bad thing. Just germinate a few more seeds then you were planning on growing. There will still be some fine plants in the bunch.

If i were you i would save a few of your original seeds as a genetic reference for future breeding.

To bring out better genetics you need to add to the genetic pool that seeds have to choose from. Get some bag seed or a cheap strain that is different in origin and breeder. the hybrid offspring of two strains. ( bag seed x F1 or bag seed xF2 ) will be vigorous and varying in traits ( as many genetics to choose from )

What seed companies do is breed a strain and refine the genetics by growing out F3 F4 F5 F6 ect. ass the crosses get progressively more inbreed you can increasingly isolate traits that are desired ( flowering time, potency, size, Ect) . when they have a desired trait that is ubiquitous between all F6's lets say, then they back cross one of the strongest F6's with an F1 or one of the parent plants of the original hybrid that made the F1's. when these plants are grown out there are fewer phenotypes and the desired traits are handed down to the seeds.

When you the average jo breads seeds you are breeding with either F1's and getting a progressively smaller genetic pool ( but more refined traits ) , or you are breeding with multiple strains making hybrids ( with large genetic pool and many phenotypes and much genetic variation ) for example a 100% indica x 100% sativa would have offspring that are anywhere from 90% one and 10% the other , or 50% 50% or 10% 90, you get the idea.

what i recommend is you germinate half your seeds and choose the best female and male, Or fuck it save all the genetics and just let your healthy plants grow ( after all you know your gonna get some fucked up shit, might as well increase your pool of genetics, and you never know what fucked up runt is gonna give you the next "god bud"). Then after you have your seeds grow them out and try to isolate the best females possible from the F2's. clone these and keep growing.

find some other genetics or order it. ( make it significantly different then your original ) and breed those with your F2's. then you will have some decently stable genetics. with good variety for entertainment.
