well im about to get into breeding with some of the seeds ive collected

maybe someone could give me the rundown on terminology and the basics

-get a male
-collect pollen from male
-get a female.
-when female is flowering (about 4 weeks or earlier) slap some pollen on some of the pistils
-wait till harvest and pick out seeds...

what i did was I had a northern lights male and a skywalker female clone. I ripped off the pollen sacks and rubbed it on some of the lower branches and I got some seeds.
Probably not the best way but neh.

With breeding there are breeding strains, F1, F3, 4.5.6..etc.. A breeding strain is a stabilized strain that only has one phenotype in the plant. And F1 is a cross between two strains. an F2 is a cross between an F1 and an F1.

If you didnt understand that here is an easier version. an F1 is W x X, an F2 is taking the W crossed with the X male or female and crossing it with another F1 of a different strain. F1's are hybrids and breeding strains are like sour diesel.

If you take a breeding strain and cross it with an F1 you get another breeding strain. It is really tricky and can be understood better if you just googled F1 vs F2 seeds.

F2 seeds are not less quality than F1 seeds they just have say 4 phenotypes, but F1 strains have 2 phenotypes and breeding strains have 1 phenotype.

What the poster above you created by crossing Skywalker with Northern Lights would be all F2 seeds. Hope this helps.

okay i kinda understand, ill give your google idea a try

okay so let me try this i kno the example i used is probably not the best to use but close

Blue (M) X Red (F) = Purple? (hybrid)?

also what would it be if i took a male and female from the offsprings and bred em what would that be

thats not quite right dude.

f1 is first generation cross. f2 is second generation cross and f3 is third generation cross etc.

so if you were to cross skywalker x northern lights that would give you an f1 cross of those 2 parents. then if you were to select a male and a female from those seeds and breed again that would be f2 seeds then if you selected 2 plants from those seeds to cross that would be your f3.

f1 crosses are generally fairly stable with a few phenotypes showing. however f2's get tricky because they will start to represent a lot of the recessive genes so you would expect wide variations in phenotypes, through careful selection and breeding through f3's and f4's etc you can eventually stabilise a strain so that it becomes true breeding and there will be very limited variation in phenotypes.

blue (F) x Red (M) = purple F1

if you took a purple F1 (F) x purple F1 (M) = purple F2

and just a small detail most breeders list there female first then there male when they right down there crosses. so if it says Nl5xaffie it would be a Nl5 female x affie male

You are correct, although I'd add that because it's hard to know really what kind of genetics you have, you might not have a true F1 if you crossed two parents you thought were unrelated (but in reality were related, maybe closely).

The progeny will tell the tale.

if you REALLY want to create a stabilized strain, after you BX your f1s, create two separate lines until you stabilize those for the traits you're after and then you re-introduce your two lines to each other for a little hybrid vigor. i think you're supposed to select for 3 generations before recombining.
