so, im about to drop around 170-200 on a 400watt hps with cool tube and another 130 + on a S&p TD150 inline. The space is 42" x 22" x 48" LxWXH. I've done moderate amoundts of research into the blackstar brand lights and I'm afraid that unless I get the BS500 or 2 BS 240s, I wont be able to cover 4 plants in 5 gallon bucket (heavily canopy managed).

LED experts advise me! If I can cut out the fan and 400, that gives me 330 to play with... assuming the leds will not overload my tems with 4x PC fan exhaust. Is it worth it? or should I suck it up and go hps?

I'm a hps fan so it might seem a bit biased but so far led does not impress especially for the price.. Ive spoke with several led dealers and from what they told me unless I'm doing a small grow or heat is a issue then I should stick with my hid so that's wht I did.

As a new LED grower, I say go with the HPS. I am using the LED panel to manage heat in a smaller space, yours is large enough to manage with the HPS setup you list.

I just disliked the idea of having to run 6 different jet engines to cool my closet grow. dont think I'll be going with the 600 as I doubt I'll be able to cool it given my space.

This majority are for hps. And hps is good but here's my 2 cents...A lot of comparison charts between led's and hps are reviewing older gen led's. Keep this in mind.A lot of the new 2012 gen led's have comparible results depending on size of space. Led is for smaller spaces, hps for bigger rooms. But you can use hps in small space. The new gen led lights use a better plant penetration than the older led lights that were being compared. You can say all that you want but results show true debate answers.

PROS AND CONS.

400w HPS is a great light, doesnt really get that hot, you could run it in a bat wing with a lite 20 dollar fan on it and keep it cool. Sounds like your closing it up tight while lights are on. So yes you would need cool tube and inline, but if you dont close it up tight during lights are on, you could run 400w by itself with just a box fan on it. No need for inline and cooltube.

If your doing 4 5gallon buckets, I would go with a 600w cool tube, with inline set-up. THat keeps your cab cool. You will get monster bud no problem.

On to led.
With the amount of money your trying to spend its going to be kind of hard. Best out come would be to get the bs500 for those 4 plants, you will get nice size bud, (nowhere near the size of a hps), but very very frosty bud. Then you dont have to deal with cooling.
You could go bs240 on 4 plants but yield wont be there, but its possible in a cab. Im staying LED, I dont need monster yields anymore, I got smoke for days, Im all about quality now. LED is where thats at, without all the extra equipment.

I plan to go had with the training on these. extensive topping and bonsai planting in the 5 gallon buckets. canopy management is a must, and I feel like that could help max out an LED runs yeild.
