Blumats. Who's using them?

You're making me more interested. In terms of growth, do you think that it's more like a coco or hydro grow in terms of speed and size?
It's definitely faster. I did use promix mycorrhizal this time and I cut my medium with additional coarse peat, and got more smds so everything's kinda different this run. Hard to say it's one or the other or all the things combined. To me it's like a hybrid of soil coco and hydro. Lol. I'm running the res and maintaining it as I would in a hydro grow but I'm using my choice of medium and the carrots take the place of timers etc so it's all on auto mode. Fill the res check ph etc and ph and that's all folks

I'm using ProMix HP+ as well...mostly for the comments that it's as close to a coco or hydro grow as you can get from soil. I've been planning on a blumat setup just for when I travel for more than 4 days, but if it's as good as the reactions here, I might reassess my needs/uses. When I set up originally my pro/academic grower friend who helped me commented, "you know it would be super easy to do hydro from what your setup is." but I'd been turned off from dealing with a res and all the fussiness of things.

I may start out later this spring with a setup for travel then if I like it, just keep it up and running. Probably would need a way to keep the water setup outside my tent though since I don't have room inside for it nor the room for a bigger tent.

Ya I've run a res before so I know how to maintain it. It's pretty simple once you have the hang of it. Yes it's a bit annoying but the annoyingness tradeoff is fair imo. Deal with adding water in the res once every 2-3 days clean it once a week or so and check the ph daily. I have mine right beside my tent on some foam risers. I don't think I'd keep it in the tent. With 12 plants they can drink a fair bit so a large enough res is key so you aren't adding water everyday. Less plants obv smaller res would do ya fine. Like a larger size Rubbermaid or trash can/bin
I learned using promix/sunshine mix. I know it well so I stick with it. Been thinking of venturing into coco but unfamiliar territory isnt where I like to grow. Lol

Plus the whole runoff thing I'm not really into it. I've tweaked my setups over the years to accommodate the way I grow. Little tweaks here and there some doodads some gadgets. Switching things over is like starting over again and all my little 'hacks' have to be re engineered to accommodate the new

Blumats are awesome but they're not set-it and forget-it. You have to change out your reservoir/bottle/jug for a clean one about every two weeks or you'll find yourself crawling across the finish line hand watering.

Well that just falls under proper res management no? If you run a res generally you're cleaning it once a week or 2 weeks anyway no matter if it's blumats or a powered system.
Once I got them dialed in I haven't touched em at all. That's pretty set it forget it to me!
Of coarse they aren't perfect and they can fuck up. But so can any other system too. Going into the grow room is a daily ritual for me that I enjoy. I'm always looking around and micro managing every little aspect in there so I'd notice if something was going south pretty quick. I give em a quick finger blast once in a while and the soil is always that perfect moisture level or just slightly drier

I just have an 18 gallon rubbermaid tote sitting outside the tent with the water line running through a bottom vent. I have a small pond pump on the bottom to keep the nutrient solution circulating. I go entire grows without cleaning it and don't check the pH only what I mix up and add to it. It's not recirculating the nutrient solution like a flood and drain setup. The nutrient solution stays stable depending on the nutrients you use. I wouldn't use anything but clean dissolving salt base nutrients. I checked the pH for a couple of weeks when I first started using it but it always stayed right at 6.0 so I stopped checking. I just set the pH of what I'm adding and dump it in.

I never hand water or flush anything through the pots by hand. How stable your solution stays is going to depend on the nutrients you're using. When I run the blumats I just use a micronutrient blend, calcium nitrate, and maybe some MKP in flower. If you add anything organic you wouldn't be able to avoid cleaning now and then.

But I literally do just set them and forget it. I'll literally go days without doing anything including looking at the plants. And then when I do it's a quick peek and pest inspection when I add more solution to the reservoir. I have no desire to stand around looking at some cannabis plants in a tent. I prefer as hands off as I can get. If I could get away with doing nothing I would. Which brings me to my most hated aspect of growing which is harvesting. I despise trimming weed. The lady helped me one time and lasted less than an hour before she said enough. She wants nothing to do with it either. Last time I asked her to help she told me to go to hell and continued to sit in her chair knitting.

Do they get salt build up in a coco operation? Has anyone had an experience with them with salt build up issues or easy? I have a box in the cupboard.

What's going on there
I have no idea. I think what happened was I reduced the amount of water I was giving them until they were almost dry. Then they got wilted a little, so I hand watered them. I think that unlocked a ton of salt that had been building up. I noticed that they were looking a little burned even though I keep reducing the EC, so I decided to flush them to see what was up. Some of the pots were in the 4000 PPM range.

I spent the entire day flushing half of them, which was a nightmare because the pots are tilted so I had to go painfully slow. I'll do the rest tomorrow.

*the wilting was from the screen in the pressure reducer clogging up the other day. I didn't wilt them from reducing the water amount. I'm still amazed by how little moisture they need.

I think the plants will be okay. I'm just glad I noticed. I'll definitely be flushing them at least once a week from now on. I'm not sure what the proper EC is for no runoff with my system, and I don't want to gamble my plants on trying to figure it out.

@JustBlazin I setup the blumats and tomato cages and I'm going to try that idea of the buried tubes.
Ya that straw idea is pretty sweet! Bottoms of my pots seem pretty good tho without em but it's something I'll likely try next run
Just make sure those straws are about 3.5" away from the carrot min or you could get dry spots
