so yeah, the mountains and state parks are being destroyed by fires intentionally set by arsonists. wtf? who would do this and why?

"The Unites States Forest Service (USFS) has reported three new wildfires in the Nantahala National Forest of Western North Carolina.

The report comes in the midst of a lengthy drought and unseasonably warm weather and just a few days after two other wildfires were reported, one in the Dicks Creek area near the town of Sylva and another in the Granfather Ranger District of the Pisgah National Forest not far from the Linville Gorge Wilderness Area.

According the the Washington Post, there were 11 active, large wildfires burning throughout the Southeast, an area known for its temperate, rain forest-like climate, as of Wednesday morning.

One fire, burning in Fannin, Co., Georgia, has spread to more than 3,000 acres.

One of the newly reported fires in Western North Carolina is currently estimated at around 100 acres. It is burning about 15 miles west of Franklin in an area known as Wine Springs and has forced the closure of a section of the Bartram Trail that runs from Wine Springs Bald to Nantahala Lake.

Another fire, which is being called The Knob fire, has engulfed more than 250 acres and forced the closure of the Appalachian Trail from Rock Gap to Winding Stairs Gap. That fire is said to be burning about 9 miles southwest of Franklin near the entrance of Standing Indian Campground. According to the USFS, no structures are currently threatened as crews work to improve containment lines.

The third Nantahala National Forest fire is the smallest at roughly fifteen acres. It is burning three miles west of Highlands near Cliffside Lake Recreation Area.

Cooler temperatures this weekend are not expected to bring relief from the high fire danger in and around Western North Carolina.

The USFS has banned backcountry fires in Pisgah and Nantahala in North Carolina; Chattahoochee and Oconee in Georgia; Cherokee in Tennessee; and Bankhead and Conecuh in Alabama—a large explosion brought about when a Colonial Pipeline operation failed on Halloween night has spawned more fires in that state.

The National Park Service has imposed a park-wide ban in Great Smoky Mountains National Park as well, a restriction that hasn’t been instated since 2007."

visibility at our house is under 100 ft, smell of burning leaves and wood are permeating the house, nothing but smoke.

i hope all the livestock survive... tons of meat wasted, and a shortage of chicken and beef if they can't cope with the carbon monoxide...

i wonder if the arsonists realized how this might affect their own local grocery stores. prices up, products down, or completely unavailable. trump won't have to destroy the country, these bastards have already started it.

so hillary or trump, big deal to everyone. an entire mountain range and dozens of state parks and national forests are destroyed over hurt feelings and a fucking election, and nobody cares?

must have REALLY wanted hillary, huh?

we've been in drought for more than two months. a burn ban has been in effect for several weeks. this can (and probably will) affect and possibly displace thousands of americans. absolutely deplorable... setting the hills on fire INTENTIONALLY because of hurt feelings! please remember this if shit does end up hitting the fan, and groceries become scarce...

Holy shit. Stay safe. I'm not sure about the arson connection or the reasoning behind it, but make a fire ring around your place now while you have time. It might be the difference whether you're there to fight the fire in person or not.
we can't burn to make a fire block, no rain in nearly three months. EVERYTHING is tinder, and ready to go up with a thrown match, and burn ban has been in effect for more than 6 weeks.

all of the fires are believed to be arson, all started nearly the same time, five have been identified and two arsonists are in custody with many more being hunted. this is a mass attack, from 'homegrown' terrorists.

and this is what i'm told by one of the 'make love, not war' leftists...

I'm one of those and I'm not saying that.

I can't even imagine how terrifying that is.

We took a drive this afternoon to see what was happening, the entire area has been evacuated. These pictures were taken over the course of thirty miles. The only people we saw once we got close, were the ones driving to see what was happening, as we were. The gate to the park was blocked, emergency vehicles only, so we couldn't get to the parking area. We had to turn around at that point and head back home. It was a sunny day but you can't tell from all the smoke.

We were told that we could be the next area to be evacuated, as soon as Tuesday :(

I can't even imagine how the cattle must be feeling, they have no cover from the smoke and the fires aren't much further from this point. We were forced to turn around once we got this close...

Back home from the drive, and as you can see, the smoke is heading our way. It's impossible to be outside for more than a few minutes without our eyes burning like hell. More than that and the coughing sets in.

Scary as fuck. This is the reason I don't live in the Colorado mountains.

is right about the terror factor of losing everything to fire.
I lived in SC ('round Lake Murray, and loved it) for a time and driving down after Asheville remember the miles of uninterrupted timber and can imagine what it would be like when tinder dry.

That's the thing though Ty, I've never felt safer than I have right here. I've always felt safe in the mountains. This isn't a natural disaster. This is deliberate. They've already arrested the man that was setting roadside fires to start this one. There are several, in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee. This is not an act of God. I don't know who is responsible for these fires, I only know that whomever it is, appears to want to destabilize this area completely. I can't imagine why anyone would do this. To destroy property and beauty intentionally. And for what?

Thank you Ty, we do too. Lake Murray is beautiful, we know the area well. Lake Lure, NC that's one of the towns that's been evacuated already. Beautiful place, just don't eat the fish; hope it survives...

Here's some shots of the state park we drove to yesterday, we couldn't see the flames because of the time of day. These were taken just last night...

the newspaper this morning says low winds and high humidity along with a backburn helped them get it to 15% contained. Acres affected has risen to over 3400+

Shit is getting real, fast...
