blackstar 240w in a micro grow?

would my blackstar 240 be too strong for my 30" W x 15" D x 33" H cab?
Would it fry newly sprouted lowryder seedlings?
And what would be a good distance from the plant?
I also have twelve cree 9.5w bulbs. Would it be better to use them instead?
And how deep would these cree bulbs penetrate?

I would be careful with what you put in a small area, I had a blackstar burn out from overheating. I would check with the cob dudes in this forum and go with that.

I love these lamps, I got the new ions but still use the 500's in flower. If you have any kind of circulation in the tent I don't see why you would have a problem.

With 30" of height I would go with the cree bulbs. I had mine (5000k)an inch to 2 inches from the seedlings the last 2 weeks and they loved it.
You should stick with the 2700k for a full run if that's what you have already which I'm pretty sure they are as the 5000k is 9 watts.
This should help you decide.

Thanks! If I get another cab, how far away would you recommend the blackstar should be for seedlings and when flowering? and how deep does it penetrate?

Thanks! I will check that thread. And yes, they are all 2700k. But how many cree bulbs would you recommend I use in this small cab? and will a philips 9.5w led work just as well? they are easier to find around here. Also, how deep will these cree/philips bulbs penetrate? And lastly, would cree A19 or cree BR30 be best suited for my area?

I'm currently incorporating a BS 240W V2 in my 1.7' x 3' x 5' tent, alongside 2x BridgeLUX VERO 18 COBS, each discharging 30W.

I've grown with LightHouse products now for over three years, original BlackStars, Chromes, and now BlackStar V2's.

The good news is that you can indeed use the BlackStar as your main light (I prefer), while placing a few of your Cree Bulbs around the "grow" for supplemental lighting. You will need to prevent the plant(s) from growing so tall that they touch the heat exhausts located on the outside of the BS. That will dry/burn the leaves up the quickest. The glass cover of the BS acts as a heat deterrent, thus allowing your plant(s) to touch the glass without any serious repercussions (although light bleaching is a possibility at that distance).

Just be sure to have cool air rolling in three-fourths of each hour, as the BS does emit heat. The bulbs will most likely as well.

I use two blackstar 240w and one ion 8 in a 3x4x5 they produce heat just like any LED does, so you need to vent but that area should be fine height wise, the 240w panel can get as close as to touching without burning if it touches it will burn so keep it at least a few inches from the plants. Good luck these are pretty decent value lights with pretty good spectrum/intensity for the price.

I am the only one who mentions burnt out bulbs, I don't mean to drag any company down that is not my intentions but those lights are not built to last.

I found out today that one led has melted and not working :-?

Can sprouted seedlings be put under the blackstar as soon as it pops out of the medium? if so, what distance do you use?

I can't see a reason not to. I think your suppose to have light waiting for it anyhow, so once you put the seeding in the soil, try to have light available for it's uprising.

With a BS, you could get away with ~18 inches of space between the soil/seedling to the luminaire. I had my BS 12" away during the first few weeks. The lower the light (given it's packing a punch), the less likely your lady will stretch.

Your opinions are safe here TCL. I've only had a single LED diode burn out on my very first BlackStar. The Chromes are decent but cost a little more. They may not last or level with the other brands in performance but LightHouse offers reasonably priced, mediocre LED fixtures.

I would agree that the quality of lighthouse hydro is very underestimated, my light has run 12/12 and 18/6 non-stop for over a year no problems at all. It does produce quite a bit of heat but I think Lighthouse hydro pushes their 240w panels pretty hard both mine killawatt readings are 135w draw so that's about 60% max output.

There is another in the thread who had his bulb burn out, that helps argue my point of maybe its not the best light for his space. If you have more room and good airflow they can perform for sure, I have seen it! BUT the problem is they get hot and when they get hot they melt.

You are right about them melting when it gets hot. That's normally around 100+ fahrenheit though. How do I know this? Well, I had my share of failure during my first legit grow. It was during the summer months, someplace out on the West Coast and I lived on an upper floor (closer to the roof/heat). I had no air conditioning and temperatures got out of hand. My temperature gauge had highs of 98 degrees fahrenheit and was stationed a few feet below the BlackStar (even hotter!). Luckily, only one LED diode in the middle burned out (like a UV or infrared one), so it wasn't like the thing went to waste. I eventually ended up cleaning the visible burnt spot and sold the unit within a year of purchase via craiglist.com (I did let the buyer know about the spot).

The implicit point is that you shouldn't even have temperatures that high in a growing environment, as it's counterproductive and your plants will, in spite, mysteriously grow bananas.

As long as he has a fan dedicated to exhausting hot air and a fan dedicated to bringing in cool air, his grow space, with the company of a BlackStar, will suffice. Mine isn't much larger than his and the room is typically around 80 degrees fahrenheit. To help Skr141, I'm using a 6" inch Air King (~120CFM) to bring cool air in, while a 4" inline fan (190CFM) takes all the odor and hot air through a filter. Indoor temperatures outside the tent don't go above 71 degrees fahrenheit.

I've had some really sky high temps in my room cause I put a 30 pt dehumidifier in a room that's only 5 foot tall by 3x3 wide so super small and it was like 98F in there all my lights were fine. Think it has to do with the newer blackstars are better made than the old ones were. When you ask the company they really tell you about how their new lights out perform their old ones in pretty much all areas. Like I said earlier this is a good light for the price and great to get started using LEDs, yes , there are better LEDs like a area 51 LED but they are much more expensive , you can get a good discount on these lights too I got 20% off a big buy off lighthouse hydro for making a forum post, saved me a good amount I think the code gothamfan saves 5% on any purchase as well.

And for the record any grow needs air exchange that means intake AND exhaust for proper air exchange the plants breathe too.

Thanks for the fan suggestions!
And also I think its my UV or infrared that melted at 95F

Will the area51 run cooler than a blackstar240?

My SGS160 runs pretty warm too , similar to my 240w panel so I would say they are about even on heat.
