For the same reason you can be proud to be black, brown, red or yellow. It's irrational pride. I agree with you there. Being proud of something you have no control over is irrational. Humans are irrational.
My Grandfather is 100% Sicilian and he is not white our people bred with them beautiful Egyptian girls like Cleopatra if you are white your probably not pure Sicilian my grandmother is from northern Italy a white piece of bread same as half their children.
