Big pots burning up nutes

So, I was told by a trusted grow buddy of mine that he’s found that if you feed til run off it helps the plants stretch a bit as the roots go out to search for food resulting in a large plant.. my plants are short and squat right now but i want them to eventually fill three rows of trellis.. i understand they’ll stretch in flower but for some reason they aren’t stretching at all right now. they’ve been about the same height for the past 3 weeks or so.. slightly taller. Anyways my question is, how much do i need to be feeding to get 15-20 percent runoff if i’m in 5 gallons. i put a gallon of feed in and it doesn’t run off not even drop.. am i really going to need to run 2-3 gallons of feed per 5 gallon pot to get some run off? could it be that my pots get too dry in between, and when i run the 1 gallon through it it’s not even saturating initially?? some help me out. lol
