BHO run results

Hello all, just started doing my own bho runs and need some advice. My first run was some mids (darker stuff) , second run was some high thc stuff (yellow stuff). Why did the second run come out this odd color? I'm using the low heat over time to purge.

I will take a rookie stab at it. I’m sort of in your boat also. I’ve tried many ways of purging without a vacuum chamber (obviously the ideal method), and I found the longer I purged it with heat, the less cloudy it appears. I just ran a batch that came out cloudy and it was the only one I let purge on it’s blast parchment nest overnight in my special place outdoors. It didn’t get any heat at all, and upon dabbing it, it has lots of terpene content, delicious, but it wasn’t as smooth as my batches previous. I use 3 boiling water baths, and then a 160 degree oven with lots of cast iron in it overnight... and sometimes a day in the freezer also. Then I package and keep in freezer.

I might be wrong, but you may try and purge the one batch a bit longer on parchment. Freeze your silicone button and it should pop right out onto parchment or silicone mat.

How old was the material for the first versus the second?

Thanks for the info! I'm def going to try to purge that second batch longer. The first stuff was some older stuff and the one that came out light was very fresh..im thinking it had alot of moisture still in it so maybe that's why it's cloudy.

Hello, was wondering if you can fill me in on how moisture affects the extracted oils? I’m in knowledge absorbing mode, and this doesn’t seem like your first rodeo!

Filtration makes a difference too. A coffee filter will let superfine particles through and that will make your BHO cloudy. I use lab filters that are much finer and strain into a pyrex pie plate that I heat on top of a pan of simmering water on a hot plate. Lots of stirring until there are no bubbles left is all I do for a purge.

This was made with well-aged sugar trim so is a little darker than with fresh stuff.

I use the 50 micron screens. I haven't tried coffee filters yet. You think maybe I need a diff size micron filter?

If you can get finer you should try that. These filter papers I have don't say anything about pore size just ultra fine microfiber ashless.

The water for our house comes from a dugout on my property and we filter it down to 5 micron yet if I fill the bathtub up and leave it sit overnight there will be a visible layer of fine sediment on the bottom. It would be a lot worse if the final filter was 50 micron. We need to redo the water system eventually and I plant to add a 1 micron filter to the lineup.

When I filter any extracts I use an unbleached coffee filter over the lab filter and there is quite a bit of fines in the lab filter after a liter or so of ISO/pet. ether/butane/everclear/colloidal silver has gone through.

:peace:

This is a batch I ran through on a single pass, and did water baths, and heat mat overnight. It was definitely one of my better batches for clarity and light colour , where the batches that contained double passed material were a bit darker. Coffee filter, and I’m pretty picky about how clean my tube is before I use it. Cleaned with alcohol on the outside and blast barrel.

Skywalker OG Kush cured trim and bud.

Moisture during extraction will extract water solubles and chlorophyll, as well as support mold growth later after extraction. It also makes extracts sputter when dabbed.

Freezing the material and using subzero ethanol or BHO will minimize its pickup.

The reason that I was asking about age, is that extracts from older material are typically darker as components oxidize and deprotonate.

Nice color and clarity!

Good point on filtration!

What size vacuum chamber would I need for small batches? I only run about 14 grams at a time for personal use. So each run I get from a gram to gram and a half approx.

I use 3 coffee filters and a 20 micro filter on the end of my open air extract glass tube along something special on the other end. =)

I’m thinking of making a stainless feel mesh diffuser for one end, stainless coffee stainless open end.. multiple layer coffee filter better? I would worry about back pressure.. but maybe that helps keep the butane liquid?

Aye, I freeze the material, pack the tube, freeze again then blast for the maximum results.
