I wouldn't recommend simple green, or any hazardous chemical for that matter. You are only pushing your luck.
Salt is tried and true, I have tried just about every industrial cleaner and the only time I would recommend using a hazardous chemical is if you intend to follow the proper steps to get it safe enough to smoke out of, back to new.
If alcohol and salt isn't doing the trick, get some paint thinner or enamel thinner... mix the salt and some alcohol in with the thinner, its going to smell terrible so do it outside. If you dont have enamel thinner, I recommend brakleen. Again, these will probably kill you if you clean your bong and don't take the proper steps to clean it out.
These chemicals are very strong but the thick graniels in salt are great for polishing the surface, right through the res, like brand new.
After you put the thinner or brakleen and salt and alcohol, cover both ends of the bong tightly and shake furiously, get away from tv's/countertops/shit thats hard, stand out side or in the middle of a large room and go fucking crazy.
pour it out, run hot water through it, fill it up, tip it upside down and empty it, fill it, empty it. do this abut 15 times. Then clean it with alcohol and salt again to make it perfect and safe to smoke. fill it up with salt and 90% alcohol, shake it again for like 5 minutes. Then run hot water through it, and empty it about 5 times.. Then run some cold water over the outside and rinse out the inside with cold water so the glass has a nice chill, fill her up, pack the bowl, put it in the bong, and get baked brotha.
