Bernie Sanders goes to Canada with group to buy insulin

Today I took people with diabetes across the border from Detroit to Canada to buy insulin — medication they need to survive.

In the United States, a single vial of insulin costs on average $340. But in Canada, the same exact drug is just $30.

Quinn showing Bernie her insulin on the way to Canada.

Why? Because the United States is the only major country on earth that lets drug companies charge whatever they want.

One in four people with diabetes ration their insulin because it is so expensive. That means American people die because of corporate greed.

Jillian talking to Bernie about her insulin on the bus ride to Canada.

So I took people with diabetes to a pharmacy in Windsor, Ontario — just a 20 minute drive from Detroit — to buy the drugs they need to survive.

Inside the pharmacy Bernie visited in Canada today, where drugs cost one-tenth the price of what they cost in the United States.

While we were there, people were able to buy the same drugs at one-tenth of the cost. One family from Indiana told me in the pharmacy that they skip paying their electric bill in order to pay for their son’s insulin. They paid $1,000 today for six months of insulin. It would have cost them $10,000 in the United States.

This family saved $9,000 by buying insulin in Canada.

We have to ask ourselves why this is possible. And it is because of two factors: the greed of the pharmaceutical manufacturers, and the fact that these companies buy off politicians who will protect their greed.

These lower prices are possible in Canada because that country negotiates drug prices with drug companies. They have the common sense to say that drug company profits are not more important than the lives of their citizens.

Bernie speaking outside of the pharmacy.

The United States must negotiate for lower drug prices, and it must allow cheaper drugs to be imported from other countries.

Our job now is to end the incredible corruption and greed in the pharmaceutical industry.

You recently signed my petition calling on Congress to let the U.S. government negotiate with drugmakers for lower prices. That's important, because the only way we will bring about change is if we're in this together.

When we are in the White House, we will take on Big Pharma and we will win. Thank you for being a part of this.

In solidarity,

Bernie Sanders

The pharmaceutical industry is prepared to spend unlimited sums of money in order to defeat us and protect their profits.

There's only one way we can take them on and win, and that is together. Chip in today to help end the greed of the drug companies.

Emails are such an important part of how we organize and how we raise money. In fact, there is no single greater source for our campaign's fundraising than emails like this one. And that's important, because no one person, not even Bernie Sanders, can take on Trump and the billionaire class alone.

Before you go about the rest of your day, help power our fight against the billionaire class by making a contribution today.

@ttystikk, you know and I know that pharma companies in this country exist in the Home of Capitalist Economy, with barely any restrictions at all, because that's the American Way, right?
They'll literally bleed us dry until we're dead, because that's what the market can bear and it's good business.

Funny, I don't see any other candidate- from either side of the aisle- doing anything like this.

Why is that?

Because in the final analysis, the rest of them care more about BEING president than what they can do with it in order to help others.
Why does Bernie Sanders support brutal dictators?

Because Bernie's braindead plan will cost between 32 and 49 trillion dollars for the first 10 years and raise taxes on middle class earners by at least 10k annually. I get that you don't care because you're unemployed but once people get wind of this, they do a 180 on it.

Also because reality exists.

You sure do spout an awful lot of Republican talking points.

But you're ex military so you get TRI CARE. Works great, doesn't it? So why can't anyone else have it?

Maybe because you're selfish of your privilege?

Wrong again. You're the one who doesn't pay, since you have no taxable income.

I don't want to pay an extra 10k+ per year. I earn my money outside of the US and I still have to pay taxes. I have been off veterans benefits for years. It's true that I was dependent on the VA for a while when I got out and my disabilities still keep me from doing most kinds of work but I work very hard as a technical diver and I need coverage that the VA can't provide.

Bernie wants to raise everyone's taxes by a lot to give us Medicare. I don't want Medicare.

In any case, you ignored my argument in favor of a personal attack because you hate tax payers who served in the military apparently.

You suck.

Keep gaslighting; it's a great use for all that flatulence. For the record, I support our troops; I want to see them STAY HOME!

Somehow you ignore the math and the facts.

Just how does the rest of the developed world pay less than half of what Americans do for healthcare while getting better outcomes in almost every category?

Must be magic or something. It couldn't possibly be a completely broken and corrupt system that just as one example, forces patients on insulin to pay 10x what Canadians do. Could it?

Why don't you just vote Republican? You talk like them and (don't) think like them.

No. Numbers matter. Not every country is the same. Other countries have lower costs because they regulate. They tax tobacco to pay for emphysema and lung cancer. They tax soft drinks and other such junk and have drastically reduced rates of metabolic diseases which account for the biggest draw on the system. Instead of making me pay for your insulin while you stuff your face with cake, you should get on a diet and increase your lifespan. You don't even work. I go through great lengths to stay healthy. I pay for what I cost.

The fact is that bernie's plan is to give everyone Medicare and he doesn't say how he will pay for it. He says that it will cost 32 trillion dollars in the first decade. Experts say that it will cost 49 trillion dollars in that period. Even if he's right and the experts are wrong it will cost everyone who earns more than 30k an extra 10k.

Fuck that.

You're right; America is far too incompetent to do any of those things.

Oh well. Just let the poor fuckers die...

Purdue, J&J, Merck and Bayer must maintain their profit margins!

Wrong again. I support universal health care.

ACA is universal healthcare. Just because I reject bernie's absolutely braindead plan does not mean that I don't want people to be covered. In fact I'm for Medicare as an option for a small tax hike.

Just because you can't defend M4A doesn't mean that everyone who opposes it is a republican and wants millions of people uncovered.

Also, you don't even have a job. Of course it doesn't matter to you if taxes go up by 30%.

3.2-4.9 trillion dollars per year would be the cost. Numbers matter.

Drug companies are the ones trying to kill ACA.

What does my employment status have to do with anything?

Did you add up what insurance premiums actually cost Americans? I'll bet that number is a lot higher.

Look; privatising a monopoly good never saves money. Ask British Rail.

Are you sure you aren't a Republican?

By getting everyone covered, premiums go down for all insurance groups. Regulating pharma and taxing products like tobacco and sugar will lower them even more AND pay for some of the bigger costs.

Instead of focusing on personal attacks and ignoring the arguments being presented you just come off as a complete moron.

Since you're an unemployed trust fund fat ass you pay nothing. You can eat any junk food you want and have the tax payers cover your insulin. At least the women who went with him to Canada have jobs but I doubt they know how much he wants to raise their taxes.

Bernie wants to give us one-size-fits-all coverage but you get it for free and my taxes go up by 30%.

FUCK THAT.

You want to complain about personal attacks? Maybe you should stop making them.

I pointed out that TRI CARE is an example of socialised medicine that's all American and works fine.

You got all butt hurt about your military status- that wasn't me, sunshine.
