I have upgraded to a bathroom extractor fan for my cab cos i was struggling to keep my temps down with my pc fan. Only problem is that it's a bit too loud can't here it in any other room, but it's still a bit loud for a sleath grow due to it being quiet loud in my room. Anyone have any suggestions or any ideas how i could make it quieter? Any advice anyone? Thanks.

how is it fixed to your cab? Vibrations cause noise so try hanging with string rather than screwing to wood.

It's nailed down on to the top with some thin installation between the cab and the fan was hoping that would help, my fan is also wrapped in foam thought that might quiet it down a bit. Thought i would try cutting a hole in each end of a box the same size as the fan and stuffing it with cotton wool, seems to have helped a bit but not much. Maybe i should fix it diffrent? Any ideas? Thanks.

I'm no expert and my set up is much different from yours but have a look at mine below, i use an old jacket and suspend it by the hose, its hardly noticeable.

I have same problem. I went to hardware store and got lamp dimmer for speed change. Hopefully it will work I will let you know once I get home! :)

Dont use a lamp dimmer. Go to hardware store and get a high med low switch for a ceiling fan. Also called rheistat. The dimmers for lights are not the same . It will work but may heat up and cause a short. Remember BE SAFE.

Damn I spent £25 on that damn dimmer... I'll just take it back, couldn't afford to start fire or fan stop and my box get hot..What if I have an expensive dimmer that I plug the fan into, and I turn it just below full speed???

man i HAD the same problem. i just hot glued my scales calibration weights to the top of the fan. slows down the motor and kept noise levels down.

lol a solution my friend! just a bit of stoner inginuity :)

BURNIN ONE...... I have a nice expensive dimmer, so my fan isnt just ghettorigged to a dimmer its a dimmer for lights up to 300w - i reckon its alright if ol rookie of the year just hot glued a resolution to his loud fan :D haha

It depends on the amperage of your bathroom fan whether a light dimmer is rated for more than that and will be safe. A lot of the new fans draw very low power actually.

Also you can just solder a large resister in series with the fan. Probably something around 100ohm to 200ohm and rated for double the wattage the fan is rated. That would cost like $1.

What is the CFM rating, the wattage, and the sones or db rating on the fan?

dimmer will be fine as long as you don't set it too low, i.e. set to at least 3/4 of the power. I use a dimmer and only have to turn it down a fraction to get much lower noise level.

i noticed same thing emmpey, im actually gonna leave it on full blast unless i need it to hush a bit...

i got the lowest CFM rating they had at hardware i wanna say its 50... i duno

That's the problem then. You bought the cheapest fan on hand with the lowest rating where they didn't give a half a crap about noise levels. If you want to make it quieter take that back and get a fan rated double the CFM that is, and built with lower sones or db rating to start with, and then run it at half speed of what you have. That combination will make it 1/4 the volume or less at the same CFM.

There is really nothing you can do. You can make a small change but it doesn't matter if you mount it with vibration isolating material 10' thick, you'll still hear it.

it being loud honestly isnt much of an issue, i guess the quieter the better

CFM is 50 and its 4.0 sones. DUH! i should have looked at the SOUND level.. damn lol

not a problem, it will be easy to replace fan in my vent system, i dont have it to where i cant remove it.

thanks for that info!
