Biden says federal government will fund Baltimore bridge rebuild

WASHINGTON, March 26 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden pledged that the federal government will pay the full cost to rebuild the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, one of the nation's busiest arteries that collapsed hours earlier on Tuesday after being struck by a massive freight ship.
“It's my intention that the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge and I expect the Congress to support my effort," Biden said, speaking from the White House ahead of a trip to North Carolina.
Wonder how the "BIG BUILDER" and his newfangled Adm. would fare w/this disaster, compiled w/Trump suck-ups w/no clue after he guts experienced Fed "DEEP STATE" workers.I'm guessing PR up the keezer,a artists rendition of the proposed replacement festooned w/Trump emblazoned in color changing LED lights,Damn that this MF w/more red flags than the entrance to the UN actually occupies our national psyche in another Pres. bid is toasting my mind.

You're on FIRE:D
As you said, it was an accident. It's really, really bad, terrible and it's going to fuck up some people's lives to the point where they will remember that day to the end. So fuck these fake conspiracies and fuck the people who make them and fuck whoever listens to them. Sometimes shit happens. There is no need to make things worse than they already are. Maybe evidence will come out that shows it was more than just an accident. But any stupid asshole who looks at video or photos that everybody in the world can see for themselves and they see a "dark secret that only they see". The gratuitous grandiosity of their self assured belief that they are the only ones who "know the truth" just annoys me to no end.

And when enough of those assholes start believing the same thing, no good ever comes from that. Its how we got Trump for prez and then got Jan 6 four years later. So fuck that and fuck them.

In 2017, the Gulf Coast and especially Houston was hit hard by a Hurricane Michael. Disaster relief went OK, maybe even good in that one but after that?

Fires in CA -- all he did was criticize CA for forestry management.
Hurricane in Puerto Rico -- he gave out paper towels as his big contribution.
Hurricanes in Florida -- response not bad but remember the sharpie?

and of course, Coronavirus.

So, maybe if the bridge disaster were in a red state, one that he felt was loyal to him it would be OK. But Baltimore Maryland? Nope, he'd let them twist in the wind.

So, it's not that he's incompetent. When it was in an area that bent the knee to him, his administrations handled disaster OK. Except when he was in over his head like he was with Covid. No, he's not incompetent, he's malicious. I'm guessing he'd make sure the harbor was open as soon as possible because that would have implications about the economy but Baltimore would have to do the bridge on its own and maybe despite Trump.

"Biden is not doing enough." "How could Biden use Federal money to get the bridge fixed?"

Republican: ‘Outrageous’ for Biden to promise feds will pay for Baltimore bridge
Rep. Dan Meuser (R-Pa.) criticized President Biden on Thursday for pledging that the federal government will pay for the replacement of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, which collapsed earlier this week after it was struck by a container ship, killing six people.

Biden said the federal government will “move heaven and earth” to rebuild the bridge. The collapse has thrown East Coast shipping into chaos, shutting down the Port of Baltimore and severing Interstate 695.

“It was kind of outrageous immediately for Biden to express in this tragedy the idea that he’s going to use federal funds to pay for the entirety [of the bridge],” Meuser said in a Fox News interview with Maria Bartiromo. “First reaction, frankly the only reaction, tends to be to spend.”

Biden on Tuesday pledged to send Baltimore “all the federal resources they need as we respond to this emergency,” promising “we’re going to rebuild that port together.”

“It’s my intention that the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge, and I expect the Congress to support my effort,” he said in remarks at the White House. “This is going to take some time, but the people of Baltimore can count on us though to stick with them at every step of the way until the port is reopen and the bridge is rebuilt.”

It’s unclear how much a new bridge would cost or how long it would take to build. Federal officials told Maryland leaders Wednesday that it could cost as much as $2 billion, Roll Call reported.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said Wednesday that the federal government has about $950 million in funds authorized for emergency use, meaning congressional action is likely required.

Meuser proposed seeking funds from the Singapore government, where the container ship MV Dali is registered, or pursuing the shipping company’s insurance.

“We just can’t take the easy route all the time and just try to spend the taxpayers’ money,” he said. “There’s no thought. Just spend.”

The National Transportation Safety Board has not yet determined the exact cause for why the Dali struck one of the bridge’s main support columns. Preliminary reports believe the ship may have lost power and was unable to steer out of the way of the bridge.

The six people killed in the collapse were roadway workers fixing potholes. Two other people were rescued from the river with injuries.

The Army Corps of Engineers announced Wednesday that it will deploy 1,100 personnel to Baltimore to help clear the wreckage of the fallen bridge, which has blocked the entrance to the Port of Baltimore.

The closure is likely to have massive economic impacts on Baltimore, where the port is used to import cars and food products and export coal. Maryland state data indicated that 850,000 car and truck imports have rotated through the area, and some 30,000 vehicles cross the bridge daily. The port also supports about 15,000 jobs.

Technically, they can't just collapse the whole thing and rename it can they? It will be an all new bridge section, but still dedicated to Francis Scott Key.. right?

For some reason, I can see them dredging it out more, and making it wider. With 4 lanes to double the amount of ships that can pass below.

Why would one want it renamed?

Could be a number of things. I read that Adobe video can also make things magically disappear due to a couple of anomalies inherent in compression and video latency in certain circumstances. Not saying it's intentionally from the Youtuber. Could just be a FOX News production issue with the backend of whatever video production software that they use. I don't know enough about this specific subject to expand any...other than I did work in the tech field for a couple of decades.

They do make a good point. We can always read about slavery and the people who committed that atrocity in history books. In fact, that's about the only place US slavers should be mentioned. Renaming the bridge would be appropriate, given his place in history. After all, the bridge was named in his honor for writing the national anthem. George Washington and Jefferson were also slaveholders, which should be brought up and discussed but they did more than scribble some words over the original words to a tavern song that was popular at the time.

I'm not all lathered up over this issue, though I agree with the sentiment.

Don't even try to conflate the national anthem with renaming the bridge. He did write the words to the national anthem and it is played to recognize the country the many sacrifices others have made for this country. Key isn't even mentioned when the NA is played. His name can rest in history books next to that song, where it should.
