Babby's First Grow

First off, the pictures.

I decided to go ahead and do a tax projection for this year, which led to running through all my finances. I never really added it up before, but on a yearly basis, I was spending around $2600, or roughly an eighth (50 bucks here) a week. When it's only 50 bucks a week, it doesn't hit you in the wallet too hard, but seeing that number really made it hit home. I had a big problem, and the solution was definitely not to stop smoking.

It happened that I had a pretty good commission coming in and got with my buddy and said "dude, I'm going to start growing. I'll cover all the startup costs if you'll split the work and consumables with me and we'll split the yield right down the middle." He happily agreed and I got to work with the design. You may be asking at this point why I'm splitting it with a friend when I already have everything covered. It's the right thing to do and I encourage everyone to go in with someone you truly trust. There's an old proverb that says (more or less) "if you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go with a friend." People learn and process information differently and an exchange of ideas leads to progress. Plus it's always nice to be able to take a weekend off. Two pairs of eyes and hands better than one.

I walked into this with a budget of around $700 in mind. That didn't happen. At all. As in, I ended up spending around $1700. But I wanted it a specific way. Total consumables per month estimates out to 50 bucks (electricity, nutrients, water, etc.), or $600 a year; a full 2 grand less than my current consumption and with infinitely more yield.

For lighting, I absolutely wanted LED, if for no other reason than because they run cooler. I've read up on the differences between HID and LED yields/quality and what I noticed was that the LEDs usually produce a little less per watt (actual watt, not advertised max), but the trichome production was noticeably higher in side by side comparisons. I don't know if this is true, but that's what the yields seemed to suggest. 4x Mars Hydro first gen 600w, totalling up to $580.

For grow medium, I really wanted to do hydro and rockwool for control reasons. If there's an issue, just dump the water and start fresh. Then I got to reading about root rot and such things, so I wanted to cut the risk of root problems. Ultimately ended up (I'm sure I'm not the first to use this design) making my own ebb and flow setup out of 5 gallon home depot buckets, elevated to provide proper draining back into the external reservoir.

Also, it had to be automatic. As it stands, the only things I really have to do is check the pH/PPM every few days and later do some tucking on the SCRoG net and change the reservoir water weekly.

It can be done for much cheaper, but I want to yield a pound every 3-4 months. Not planning on selling, just nice to be able to unwind after work and not have to worry about things. Plus some gifts for my buddies.

Anyway, I went with Blue Dream, Green Crack, Lemon Skunk, and Cheese. I'll upload pictures every week during this grow. So far I germinated them last Monday 11/9/2015 and they sprouted (3/4, anyway) on Thursday 11/12/2015, so expect updates around Thursdays.

I look forward to any constructive criticism and advice you have to offer. It's going to be a hell of an endeavor.

For a faster yeild I might suggest a more vscrog type grow. Hang the lights slightly wonky and closer together when the plants are larger, then hang your screen with the center being the lowest point by 10-18 inches. Let the plants grow up into the screen.
It will maximize your screens yeild to veg length ratio short of going full 6-10 plant vscrog or doing a sog.

I'm having questions about LED and trichs production myself lately. From my understanding, more UV = more trichs.
As a first timer getting close to harvest, I've realized over the course of owning my 300w LED that it is very hard on my eyes. In fact, as I have a background in welding, I have had the pleasure of getting blasted with UV in the eyes. I've noticed I've been getting the same damn effect, as arc eye, (Scratchy, sandpaper eyes) if I'm in my grow tent with the LED too long, even without direct eye contact with the light.

So I checked my LED spectrums. She is throwing off UV @ 380nm. Now as to the amount of diodes, I have no idea, but clearly its enough to bother my eyes. In saying that, my plant is throwing off some serious frost starting 3rd week flower for only 300w (150w actual). Now I don't know about the larger mars hydro, but from the last time I checked, the 300w marshydros didn't have the 320-380 UV range. Just a heads up.

Sooo, if the 600w does, I had to get some special gardening/uv protected glasses and I would suggest anyone else do the same to protect their eyes from the UV in LED's.

Already got a set. Had LASIK a few years ago and I'm very protective about my eyes now. You are correct, there are no 320nm-380nm bulbs. We shall see how it goes.

Right on! You can always supplement the UV from another source too I guess. I ended up looking at my diodes and I have 2 diodes that are UV out of 100 ... so meh.

Ok, so we're at one week now. I am putting hydroton in the pots, but ran out. Got more on the way.

Cheese is not doing so hot, but let's see if we can bring her back. It's weird because the first two planted were the cheese and the blue dream. Huge difference between the growth rates.

Green Crack is amazing. You will love it. I usually get it when I can for my meds.

Maybe it's me but they seem really slow.... the cheese looks like a day 3-5 on a 23w cfl grow, and the green crack looks barely over 7 days on a healthier grow. How far are you keeping these leds from "canopy"?

I originally had them at around 12 inches, now it's closer to 18. They weren't getting any vertical development at 12 inches. Going to learn from my mistakes and get it right and grow something truly dank.

They may just be struggling in the system and may need time to work on roots before you see the expected growth rate. I might also look up some similar style cheese grows just to find out what conditions cheese likes specifically. Since so many people love and grow cheese, I'm sure someone could tell you exactly what environmental factor should be tweaked. Hopefully one of the "experts" will take notice.

Week 3 update! Click here for pictures! I've been sick this week and didn't feel like taking a half week set since there weren't any problems happening. Green Crack is still a little slow to grow, but it looks healthy. Let me know what you guys think. I'm going back to bed lol.

Aaaand we're back. Week 4 (28V) update. No improvements have been made to the tent in the interim. Just changed res yesterday and moved up to full veg nute schedule. 5ml/gal Micro, 10ml/gal Gro, 5ml/gal Bloom, 3ml/gal CalMag.

Any advice on Blue Dream and Green Crack?

Lemon Skunk is doing the best of the three. Topped 3 days ago and transplanted yesterday.

Blue Dream is up next. Started looking unhappy after the topping. Then the transplant happened yesterday. Looked like it was about to roll over and die after, but it perked up later on in the day. It's back to looking unhappy. Will add some superthrive when it comes in later today. Hopefully that'll fix it up.

Lastly, Green Crack. At least it's growing again. Not topped, but transplanted yesterday. It was the only one that didn't have roots hanging down into the small amount of water left in the bottom of the buckets.

And we're back! Week 5 (35V) is over. Everything seems to be going well now. Time to top again!

Nutes: Flora Micro 5ml/gal
Flora Gro 10ml/gal
Flora Bloom 5ml/gal
Calmag 4ml/gal
hydroguard 2ml/gal
Armor Si .5ml/gal
Floralicious Plus 1ml/gal
Florablend 3ml/gal

PPM=780
pH=5.8
Light Schedule: 18/6
Average Temp: 78F
