Auto vs. Photop.

Hi! I'm wondering, is there any difference in HIGH/effect between autoflowering and photoperiod strains?

yes you will notice a difference in high

I can't speak from experience but the Marijuana Botany guide book says that the original Ruderalis discovered in Russia had very little THC and high CBD.

From that i'm guessing people have tried to breed in potency but it wasn't there to being with so any cross with it now is inherently susceptible to lower THC.

From experience probably not too much in it. Depends on the grower!
Depending how big your growing it and if wanna clone will depend if wanna go auto or photo.

I have grown both. There are some very good auto strains out there but if you wanted to compare the top 5 autos verses the top 5 photo strains then the photos are gonna be alot better. That is not to say autos are no good but regular seeds are better in terms of potency generally speaking.

Oh a good reason to do auto is all year growing....in some climates that is. All you snowing places no of course. In aus we can have a winter like other people's summer so it's not too cold. In fact summer is too hot.

If it's the wrong season you could pop some auto's outside instead of waiting a whole year for the right season.

Auto's indoor though i POINTLESS!!

1) Auto's veg for like at least 3 weeks still before flowering.. you can just do a photo and flower it after that time.
2) You can 12/12 from seed and get the same result as auto
3) 24/0 light doesn't make auto's grow better
4) Can't take mothers and nothing beats having being able to clone from a good pheno (not just getting the random result from seed)

I see two real advantages to autos indoors:

a. They're the fastest way to go from seeds to bud. Some autos will go from seed to buds in 8 weeks flat. Even the fastest photoperiod strains that only take 6-7 weeks to flower still take another 3 weeks of veg before they'll start to flower from seeds. This alone is a good reason for indoor autos in some situations.

b. As dwarf plants, autos are well-suited to microgrows, like in PC cases and such. Because they can be lit 20-4 during flowering they can pack on more bud weight in the same number of calendar days as small regular photoperiod plants.

Adding these two things together, you should check out the comments in this thread for an example of how the short cycle times means growing autoflowers from seed can give massive yield-per-unit space comparable to, or even exceeding "sea of green" type growing in a relatively small space:

Of course breeders try to increase potency in new strains; that's one of the main reasons to breed in the first place.

All of the modern-super strains were created by selective breeding over many many generations from lower-potency strains.

There is absolutely no reason why this same process can't be done with ruderalis-based autos to greatly improve the potency of the offspring, and in fact this HAS been done. You just have to selectively breed the autos with more conventional potent strains over many generations, selecting each time for potency and retention of the autoflower trait. Do it enough times, and you might have something phenotypically similar to the original potent parent, but autoflowering. And again, in fact there are any number of strains like this on the market right now.

At this time the best autos still aren't as good potency-wise as the best photoperiod strains, but they are still pretty darn good and miles ahead of the original "lowryder" strains from 10 years ago.

Now, some people believe that lots of "dark" time is necessary for maximum cannabinoid quality/production and so maybe that means that you can never really do as well with 20-4 strains as you can with 12-12 strains. But again, that doesn't mean you can't still get something auto that's really good and better than a lot of conventional strains.

i haven't grown out any autos yet but i will be the only advantage to them i see is that i can fill any gaps in my veg area with them so the space isn't idle and i'll get some random bud here and there from them but other than that with the genetics available today i don't really see the point especially when you factor in the extra electric cost of nearly double the amount of light hours and lower unproven yields

growing autos indoor in not pointless, in fact that is all I do. If you're a home hobby grower with limited space and want to crank out some quick plants then they were made for you. Here is a bella afrodita from delicious seeds at roughly 47 days from seed. It'll pull over an oz in well less than 60 days at the rate it is maturing.

thanks man, not going to be a maximum yielder like some of the other autos I've grown but hot damn she is stinky and a fast growing plant. I've never had one finish as quick as the bella afrodita from delicious. Also very well behaved structure given my limited area. I'll def grow more strains from delicious in the future

.... you always seem to have something tastie growing, have you ever done Dinafem Critical jack? just germing one now.... wondered what to expect (any pitfalls to be aware of?)

can't help you there man, the one blackjack strain I grew ended up being wildly out of control and got 3 ft tall and wide. Actually had to cut her down a bit early as I ran out of space and she was getting burned by my lights (even after I tied her up). It was from Sweet Seeds - its hanging now. I probably won't grow that particular one again. Have been meaning to check out dinafem though have seen others do good things with their strains

i have heard good things about dinafem so i'm full of hope...... might try builders bucket instead of 3 gal square pot

air pots are great, I'll never go back to plastic. They're very inexpensive and you can recycle them several times before they're toast. 5 gal pot per auto = massive yield (for an auto).
