Whilst there may be some double-handling to pre-soak & do paper towels etc., it at least shows that the seed is viable before it goes into a growing medium. Hence, it saves space on pots &/or wastage of jiffy's, prepping medium etc...etc.....

My issue (if @Givingstifftothestiff has diagnosed correctly - & my own reading & observations would seem to back that up) seems to be damping-off, which I'll now endeavour to correct before I pop any more seeds.

My method hasn't changed for years & all my current Jiffy's are from the same batch. However, all my locally-sourced seeds have broken the surface this year, but the ones from O/S have all failed.

Time for a re-think of my method.

I just see the souble handling as a chance to damage the tap root while transferring to medium, and all seeds are either gonna pop or not so just chuck em in and if they do a no show oh well chuck them away ive only had 1 no show over the past 30ish seeds with just chucking them straight into medium

I see where you're coming from, but I've recently had 20 no-shows from 20 confirmed germinations (ie. before they went into Jiffy's) & nothing has changed in my method, so it's gotta be something else causing the problem.

Everyone to thier own
I've used ppaper towel method sinceI can Remember
Bertha last year was actually chosen from 3 wonder womans cos the root coming out of the seed was the thickest of the 3

Fairo many ways to skin a cat
I got taught a way that's never failed me. Plus I can see which is the quickest and most vigorest. If you were chasing pheno, this would be a great guide. Would be a strange world if we all thought the same.
I'll be the first to admit, no idea about I doors. Never interested me, but good to see guys with different set ups etc so it gives me a few different ideas if I went down that path.

I'll be as diplomatic as I can here, considering I'm a bit "snappy" right now, but not in any way directed at you or anyone else..... It's just "me" being kinda frustrated & disappointed right now...in this moment. Probably had a few too many beers on an empty stomach & lack of sleep. Bear with me....& some logic.....

My method of popping/planting seeds hasn't changed in several years & it's always been perfectly fine. Sure, I'll get a few "no-shows", but you get that occasionally & I accept it as part of the game. This time is different.

I've done everything the same as I would always do, but having 20 no-shows from 20 CONFIRMED germinations before they go into Jiffy's is completely out of the ordinary. Something is different. Something is WRONG!

Seeds that I bought from OS with the intention of a bumper OD season have all failed to take-off, despite doing everything the same as always, with previous success. Same source (Seedsman), same technique. Different result this time.

Given the advice/experience from @Givingstifftothestiff (& my own subsequent research......), I'm going to conclude that it's caused by "damping-off" & that can be caused by any one of multiple pathogens.

I'm going to address this by giving any seeds I want to pop a soak in dilute H2O2 & do the same with my Jiffy's before transfer.

Whilst I've lost a lot of seeds that I wanted to grow OD this season to this shitful situation, I reckon I can reclaim it & move on with greater knowledge in future......albeit with less of the stuff I actually wanted to grow right now.

Second-tier-preference seeds will be popped......& I still have the IB & Wonder Woman plants in the tent ready to go out in the ground in about 3 weeks.

End rant.

I didn't tag you to read it, but you read it all anyway, in entirety & got it, eh?

Yeah, I can be a bit verbose occasionally.....
