Are you better off today, than you were 4 years ago when Trump was POTUS?

my answer is No, but for reasons that do not have to do with national politics.

As an SSDI recipient, ask me again in two years. If that man cheats fate and ends up in the White House again, chances are that I will do far, far worse than if President Biden wins his second term.

So given the choice between “no better” and “catastrophically worse” it’s kinda a no-brainer.

I thought that the increases were pretty large in SSDI over the last couple years, I am not there yet in life though so know I could be mistaking this for that and missing something.

But I do get it. I had a grandma that hadn't died from Covid at this time in 2020 that I no longer do. And would have had not had a big issue going out to eat and hearing someone sneeze too back then.

A million + deaths changes a lot of things.

My rent increases alone more than wiped the SS increases out, so my real earnings are rather less.
As for Covid, that played a weird number on me too. So, all told, the last three years have been a strange trip. Sorry to hear about your grandma.

Renting has been hit hard, especially after having all the increases during the pandemic dumped on people at once. I got lucky and bought right before shit hit the fan, but I was already worried about inflation due to the money Trump was dumping into the system in his first few years.

Thanks man, she is missed. And yeah the last handful of years really has been intensely weird.

Dont you have a student loan removed now? I sae something about it.
I have not, unfortunately for me I am in the middle green area. It sucks that the Republicans sued to stop tax paying Americans from the program that would have stopped them from having to pay more in interest than was forgiven. But it is nice that a lot of Americans have been able to get out of the hole the increases in college costs have put them in.

there were alot of parameters to have those forgiven, you have to have them for a certain period of time, most people didnt have all of them done , they have to have specific requirements in order ot be eligible it did help im sure alot of people but it wasnt like oh we forgave all student loans for everyone

Thosr student loan forgiveness was actually a contractual agreement that was from 2007 under bush but never put into place until just last year or whatever. so most "newer" students didnt qualify

Am i better off?

no, i think the majority of people make this a political issue, where they will fight for their party side to say they were better off specifically under whomever they prefer

but the cost of living is absolutely astronomical compared to 4, 5,6, whatever years ago. the majority of people i know are absolutely struggling to keep a roof over their head.
rent is outrageous, housing is unattainable for most people, gas is up, groceries are up and the jobs arent paying proper wages or giving good benefits for example i saw recently a job listing for game stop they want a bachelors degree..for 13 fucking dollars an hour.

that is the job market. but this isnt specific to the usa, this is everywhere, it doesnt matter if i talk to my canadian friends my uk friends or my american friends.

I heard it was any body that took 10-15k for 10 years that feels not a lot

Sorry y’all, I am just waiting for the newest “new” pandemic to show up. Every election year… Obama- Ebola, trump- Covid 19, Biden- new and improved Covid (less deadly) still pandemic and RSV. What in earth could be coming this round? Bush jr was SARS wasn’t it? Maybe wrong… but seems like every election/ leap year another rolls out…

There never was an Ebola pandemic. There was an epidemic in West Africa, but its peak was in ‘14.
Similarly the Covid reboot was already declining at the end of ‘23.

It’s always better to fit the model to the data, not the other way around.

A centuries old strategy first employed by Charles IV when he ran against Louis IV to become King of the Romans. Louis IV was doing well in the polls but then tHeY suddenly released the Black Death, creating a pandemic killing almost 50 million people including many of Louis IV's supporters.

I think you may be on to something. But, since there's no pandemic, better than 4 years ago no?

I don't know about majority of people, but I am doing this to highlight the absolute shotshow 2020 was here in America, which it seems that a lot of the right wing propagandists want to pretend was not a direct result of Trump's presidency. And it gives me something to actually look at when people respond, which thank you for doing.

I am not trying to somehow 'pitch a side', or force some outcome as much as learn what I can while reminding myself and anyone who happens to look in here about what was actually happening in 2020. It was around May 2020 things got really hot here, but it started right around this month.

So even though a lot of employed people might not look at their 401ks and realize they are far higher now, and not realize that their homes were not foreclosed on and gained substantially in value over the last 4 years because Biden and the Democrats passed legislation that kept the state/local governments from bankruptcy after Trump left them hanging, I understand that it is a struggle for a lot of people and am not trying to dismiss that.

but the cost of living is absolutely astronomical compared to 4, 5,6, whatever years ago.
True, it is a pain in the butt, I am spending about $350 a month more in groceries/pet supplies/gas. Luckily though my mortgage was set prior to the pandemic so I am lucky and have not had a increase in that.

the majority of people i know are absolutely struggling to keep a roof over their head.

rent is outrageous, housing is unattainable for most people,
I am happy that I am not renting. I wouldn't mind being the one renting them out, but I am not at that point in life I can afford that.

This was around the time that a couple hundred thousand houses were sold during the pandemic.

Screen Shot 2024-03-07 at 11.24.12 AM.png

And prices started to skyrocket.

Screen Shot 2024-03-07 at 11.25.03 AM.png

So far though it looks like the actual rate of people holding onto those homes has been stable, and even increased a bit, which is a good thing imo, even if it does increase costs to new buyers.

Screen Shot 2024-03-07 at 11.30.23 AM.png

gas is up,
And it is scary that it might get far worse. I just learned today that Trump sold our major gas refinery to Mr. Bonesaw himself back in 2017. Hopefully we don't get screwed by that again in this election cycle, but I am making sure to budget for it this summer/fall. I really wish we would not have given dictators of the planet so much power over the costs of our transportation.

Screen Shot 2024-03-07 at 11.46.43 AM.png
groceries are up
The price gouging needs to stop. I know we have not been paying for a lot of the long term impacts of what we buy-in the stores here in America (like pollution from producing it and all the plastic used to package it), but the price increases are not going into offsetting those, or coming up with better way to produce things, far too much of it is just being vacuumed up into profits, which is not filtering to the actual employees of those companies in the way it should be.

I don't know about the game stop thing, that is crazy, I wonder if it was for some kind of management job or a local example.

that is the job market. but this isnt specific to the usa, this is everywhere, it doesnt matter if i talk to my canadian friends my uk friends or my american friends.
I was happy to see Biden here in Detroit walking the picket line with the Union workers, and know they got a nice boost to their incomes, which helps out our neighborhoods around here a great deal. And know most people I know got a sizable increase in their wages, but get there are always people being left out and we need to do a better job at supporting them as a whole.

idk, if you still have a note after 10-15 years no longer having it would be a great relief since you were likely making min payments and just treading water on them.

They've only busted one out of who knows how many secret bio labs right here in the US. There could be another 1000 underground labs harboring upwards of 20 different infectious pathogens, including SARS. In other words, none of it will ever be eradicated. It's almost like someone is secretly funding these labs and paying them to start small outbreaks in specific areas for political gain, and trying to blame anti vaxxers instead.

You never know what will be next, but it will be something!

Is that part of a sequel or an entirely different movie than the one with the matrix babies you were working on?

Nah more likely just trying to get ahead of the next projection away from a Russian lab leak.

An explosion has caused a fire at a Russian biological research facility that’s one of only two centers in the world known for housing samples of the smallpox virus.

The blast occurred Monday during repair work of a sanitary inspection room at the Russian State Centre for Research on Virology and Biotechnology, known as Vector, near the Russian city of Novosibirsk in Siberia, the center said in a statement.

One worker was injured in the incident and is being treated in intensive care for burns, Russia’s TASS news agency reported.

In its statement, Vector said that no biohazard material was being stored in the room where the explosion took place. The city’s mayor also insisted that the incident does not pose any biological or any other threat to the local population, according to TASS.

The fire broke out when a gas cylinder exploded on the fifth floor of the six-story laboratory building in the city of Koltsovo. The blast caused windows to smash but there was no structural damage to the building, TASS reported.

Founded in 1974, the Center for Virology and Biotechnology was once known for developing biological weapons research during the Cold War Soviet era. It is now one of the world’s largest research centers developing vaccines and tools for diagnosing and treating infectious diseases.

The head of the Koltsovo science city, where Vector is located, told Russian state news agency RIA-Novosti that there was no biological threat.

Scientists at the center are developing vaccines for swine flu, HIV, and Ebola. In February, scientists there wrapped up clinical trials of an Ebola vaccine, according to TASS.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is the only other center in the world approved and known to have live samples of the deadly smallpox virus.

Last year, the US Food and Drug Administration announced its approval of the first drug to treat smallpox. The contagious disease was eradicated in 1980 thanks to vaccination efforts, but there are concerns that it could be used in a bioterror attack.

Could viruses survive a blast?
Dr. Joseph Kam, Honorary Clinical Associate Professor at the Stanley Ho Centre for Emerging Infectious Diseases (CEID) told CNN that rules for storing viruses are very strict and highly dangerous diseases such as Ebola and smallpox would be stored in the highest “Level 4” laboratory.

Access to the samples would be limited, special containers are used and the storage mechanism is different from other laboratories, Kam said.

He added that while fire would be hot enough to destroy viruses, an explosion could risk spreading the virus and there would be a danger of infecting those in the room or contaminating the immediate area.

“Viruses are fragile and more than 100 degrees or more will kill them,” Kam said. He added that under certain circumstances, an explosion could spread the virus. “Part of the wave of the force of the explosion would carry it away from the site when it was first stored,” he said. That contamination zone could be 10 to a few hundred meters depending on the size of the blast and other factors such as wind speed and direction, and whether it was an airborne virus.

The incident comes just weeks after an explosion near the site of a suspected failed missile test in northern Russia that killed at least five nuclear specialists and caused radiation levels to spike. Conflicting official accounts regarding the incident heightened concerns of a potential cover-up.

All politics aside, I'd say im about the same. Of course my situation is different than most. I own everything I have, and no debt. Prob the biggest impact we saw this past year was property insurance... it went up 45%. Gas is still under $3.00 here. 401K is fat, don't really know what the hell is keeping that propped up (the Dow)...Groceries are higher for sure, but we don't pay for meat, which is ridiculous these days. In another thread I had mentioned that we may not even be able to get the same coverage on property insurance, as a lot of companies are pulling out of high risk States, and/or halting new policies all together. Which is going to force a lot of people to be self insured.
