here is the light in question

High Tech Garden Supply

I want to know if these are good for vegging large healthy moms, that will be chopped for many clones. ( how many?, as many as possible)

a 4x4 area of high output fluorescents, with 5 gallon mums per sq.ft, total 16.

is this expecting too much?
or should i just go for a 600 metal halide in an adjust a wing reflector?

hell yeah. t-5's are great for vegging mama's. when i had a bigger setup i had a 2x4 tray with a 4'x8bulb t-5 fixture over it for my moms. as long as your not planning on letting them get much taller that 18" you should be just fine.

I didn't look up your particular light but the answer is YES, you can keep a mom under one CFL so a T5 will be no problems.

well, if the most you would recomend is a foot and a half tall, how many cuts could i get from that.
so far sounds like i should go with the metal halide as i want 10-15 min per plant
thank you for the response'sssss

you could take more than that easy.
Depends how often you want weekly, bi-weekly, monthly?

OK I read your question a little closer. Sorry.

You will be perfectly happy with that setup, especially since you are only doing moms. Those t5 54 watt HO bulbs are pretty bright when you put them together. I lit a whole room with 4 of them, with 6 bulbs in it was too bright to sit under and work on a computer, so if you had 8 of them you will be doing some serious lighting.

If you want T5's then go ahead and order, it will do exactly what you want.

It also looks lke E-conolight sells a 6 bulb setup with the bulbs for $134, so for the HTG price you could have a 12 bulb setup, if you wanted to see what too much light is, you would witness it yourself in a 4x4 area with 12 t5 HO bulbs burning.

For a little more money they also carry the high specular reflector.

Looks like bulb choices are 3500, 4100 and 5000.

i wish i could remember where but i read some article about how florescent lighting can break down a plants cellular tissue or something like that over a long period of time.. has anyone ever heard of this? my buddy showed me the article about 4 months ago when i was visiting him and had switched all his mothers over to MH. i wish i could remember where he showed me but it seemed to be a pretty reputable source (like a university study i think)

If you think it is reputable because it was a university study you have a lot of growing up to do my friend.

With studies it's hard to tell, the people doing the study want money to do it, the person giving the money usually expects certain results to prove what they are doing is right, so if they publish the wrong results the money gets cut off, so sometimes it just isn't what it seems.

Remember never believe what you read and only half of what you see .

i guess reputable was not the proper choice of words, what i was trying to say is it wasnt off of some MH manufacturers website or some ezine article.. it actually had a scientific method with variable situations and whatnot.. it was an interesting read either way ill try to find it

i would take 50 cuts every 2 wks with the previously mentioned setup. i kept like 6-8 mothers in the 2x4 tray. i topped them to keep them branchy and low. i never had a problem getting the cuts i needed. if your gonna have a area twice that size you should be golden.

wow, thanks la9 for the link and info for the light.

so can everyone please confirm that in an area of 4x4 with two of these lights, and 16 mums in 5 gallon buckets, taking about 150- 180 cuts monthly is possible
also is the hight restriction of 18inches accurate?

again, thanks to all who contributed
