Im not "rich" by any means BUT if $16.00 US> dollals is "expensive" Then your growing the wrong plants!! I "try" to give my plants the best i can afford, and i dont think that $16 US. dollars is expensive by anyones standerts. Your soil is ONE of the most important things for your plants .
That worked out at over one$ US per gallon. Expensive in my book.

I spend a lot less than that, in fact this year I have spent NOTHING on soil - I have reprocessd last year´s - it has been through my composter with green and brown materials added - came out as a rich brown humus to which I added some wormcasts and perlite and lime left over from 2009.

Pretty good result this year

I still recomend Coco for a first time grower ,And only £10 for 50 ltrs :)
OK, but that is just a substrate that will support roots and hold water. Like peat and ´forest product´ it contains no nutrient, which need to be added.
