Are led lights worth it?

I've ran about 3 flower runs now and so far once I got over my fear of burning up my buds the light is a game changer and it is very easy to manage I put a fan on the top of the light and I can take it all the way up to the top of my tent about five inches away I have no issues and I have the AC Infinity and its environment system which is very nice
I like the look of the AC infinity kit because you can control the environment digitally but is it as good as looks Ive only used cheap budget equipment for my 2 projects so far...

The radiant heat a HPS produces is great for winter grows, If I wasn’t lazy I’d swap out HPS in winter snd LED in summer rather than just have ballasts sitting collecting dust.

Also, Hps penetrates deeper into the canopy, I find LED requires scrog for optimal development

I have 3 tents and AC infinity and I feel like I end up spending more on the cheap tents trying to get the ladies healthy than in the tent with the good light so I guess what I mean by that is with the better light the ladies are able to get the most out of what you put in

That's why I didn't want to move away from my HPS, until I bought that HLG Scorpion Diablo X. I accidentally monster cropped these plants and yet that light had no problem pushing through 5' plants

With led you will need to feed more on top of that if your anywhere cold you gotta give heat during lights off however saying that if you stay somewhere warm led will probably be better for you where im at it can get cold so i still rock hps and it suits me id say no light is perfect they all have there strengths and weaknesses best you could proly do is mix them that way u got best of both worlds if you can get away with it of course

Actual 600w LED is gonna put out the same BTUs as the 600 HID as well. Unless you dim the LED light. I mean, that's a nice feature, but.. How is that really worth it though? Thats like buying a lambo and only doing 50 on the freeway every day. You can dim 600 HID's too, with a cheap digital ballast.. so yeah. Still way cheaper.

If summer is the only time your having overheating problems in a mostly sealed up room, I don't think LED is really worth it, IMO. Sounds to me like the HPS with proper venting will work fine most of the time.

If you end up having to add a heater to run along with the dimmed down expensive LED to keep the environment dialed in... make sure to add the heaters wattage to your final GPW during harvest, as if it is part of the light fixture before comparing to HID. You can't have a heater running and say you got 1-3 GPW (more than HPS), even though everyone seems to. Its cheating, and 1gpw is more like it! I think unless you live in a desert or somewhere warm enough, that you won't getting anywhere near the savings that are advertised. In fact, anywhere an LED works effeciently as is, you should be growing the weeds outside anyway.

I would probably just rig up the window vent and buy some new genetics, then go for another round before blowing a wad on a fancy light fixture.. I live where its not all that warm except the dead of summer, and LED are mostly worthless, and there is no way I could put HPS in a room without venting in the summer either.

If you can grow a shit load of seeds, your not doing all that bad, and that was probably the plants fault..

The first thing is vent that hot air and stop Recirculating it.

Then assess the situation before spending more money.

Seen it too many times , people throwing money at a grow trying to overcome basic things like venting heat .

Anyhow , on AC infinity, they make some nice stuff. Extraction fans are their bread and butter.
Not the most expensive and probably not the finest quality materials, but they are nice and offer very affordable control.

Lots of interesting comments in this thread... :eyesmoke:

Seems like attitudes are changing when it comes to strains that have intersex tendencies.
It's definitely getting more common, which is a bummer.

Last year, at least 5 of my outdoor males were misidentified as female before being repotted. I was watching like a hawk, and repotted immediately after seeing pistils. Strains varied... and all were from reputable breeders.

Didn't figure out what was going on until later, when I saw the exact same thing happening in solo cups with seedlings that were raised under 12/12 from day one.
Useless trivia: Males with pistils are way more common than females with balls, but usually go unnoticed.

I recently saw a comment in a different cannabis forum by a breeder I have tons of respect for, and he said this about hermies in his new gear:
"the chance is high as both sides of the line are prone to those traits
(that would be no ones fault, kinda normal with those kind of genetics.) "

I beg to differ, it would be the breeders fault they herm, but at least he’s upfront about it “grow at your own risk”. I personally have never used a hermie plant to breed, I was going to use Cherry Pie at one point but nixed it do to herm tendencies.

Your HPS heats the tent during lights off? I'd like a link to buy one of those lights please! Come to the light side (LED)! Lol

A 600 watt LED panel isn't what you would replace a 600 HPS light with. LEDs are more efficient so you could run 400 watts of LEDs, get the same amount of light with less heat.

Sure why not? ;)

It's called flip flopping. Not only can you get away with having less available amperage to grow even more, but one tent grow can heat the other and vice versa, back and forth every day/night cycle..
