im looking to start a few plants indoors in veg and mainline and lst to perfection a couple months b4 outdoor transplant. seems like a kinda over kill for a veg light?
Not over kill, but over priced for not a great footprint. As BushMaster suggested, if you're trying to do more than one plant, get a 4ft T5 or three, you'll cover more square footage with the same, or better results. I have two of those and they don't cover much. Plants like em just fine, but they have shitty coverage.

If I were you, I'd pick up a cheap 48" two bulb t5 or t8 fixture at Walmart for like $15. I think you'd get the same results for a fraction of the price.
They are Lights of America brand. I've used before and was good. They for sure are not t5. T8 or 10

I've used those big cfls before but without a hood to put em in, the footprint sucks. But when you add the price of bulb plus hood(and potentially mogul socket cord) it gets pretty pricey....they also can create some heat...so depending on your setup, you may need to ventilate differently. The Flouros above are very low heat.

Edit: here is what I'm using for my veg tent. It did have a few small dents but completely acceptable and worth the 25% discount. 112$ 2ft 6lamp t5 fixture with bulbs.

This is a Hydrofarm 200watt cfl/hood.106$

And that sucker will get hot

Maybe I missed it but how big of a grow area are you trying to cover with your lighting? I have moved away from sodium and fluorescent bulbs and now use LED only. Prices are really coming down.
