I’m with you my man. I have been thinking about doing this. I have 7gal fabric pots, I might put a cone in the middle at the bottom, that has lots of holes in it. This will allow an air space to go upwards to let some air for the roots.

I think since it’s a 7 gallon and just a cone, u prob got plenty of soil still for one seed to have a nice yield. I originally did it to save money using less soil but won’t again.
I added too many water bottles in my two 5 gallon buckets so my plants won’t have as much soil to get huge as if I didn’t. But they look decent now.
my other 5 gallon bucket is just full soil so that’s gonna be better.

Cut the top off the bucket and make it a 3 gal if money is an issue.

My buddy was down and out and used beer 12 pack boxes with garbage bag liners lol. I have to give him credit that herb was killer.

More than one grower has planted directly into the Fox Farm bags or bales of Promix.

I use 15 gal GroPro Injection Molded pots for 70/30 Coco/Perlite. You're going to have problems growing in a 5 gal with Dirt. I used to use 25 gallon pots for soil and being a basement grower, fuck that.
I grow indoor in dirt (FFOF) in 5 or 7 gal bags, no problems, get about 6 oz bud, dried and trimmed, per plant.

I think it should be said that it's good that OP is trying different experiments. This one didn't return rewards, but others might! Keep up the creativity

I also live in cali - i can source FFOF locally for about $18 a bag ( 1.5 cu ).

Your pricing may vary to your area.

So i did you a solid - look up Deep Roots Hydroponics in sonoma county - they list ocean forest but you gotta call them for pricing. Also they have Happy frog potting soil for $13 a bag ( another alternative. )

I run 7gal pots.
I start 1 plant per month
Recycle my soil 1 time
1³ ft is about 7 gallons
2³ft bag happy frog $29×2 $58
4³ft bag perlite $28
8³ft fills 8 pots 2 runs each
My soil cost $86 per 16 months for my indoor grow.
My spent pots get flushed out an dump in my compost to cut acidity/compaction/concentration this is what will feed my outdoor grow next spring, I plan on pulling 8 plants next year. All said and done soil cost comes to about $3.50/plant I would love to spend less but that is nothing to bitch about
