what kind of pots

if u are new and worried about over watering get one of these untill u get a handle on the pot weight (wet soil over dry soil)

http://www.amazon.com/Luckystone-PROFESSIONAL-TEMPERATURE-MOISTURE-SUNLIGHT/dp/B00CCWKL7Q/ref=sr_1_5?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1376115861&sr=1-5&keywords=4+in+1+soil+tester

i own one and still use it to test the ph and the larger bags i use

as for watering u give the plant what it wants .........i have one i water every 24 to 36 hours .........others every 48/72 hours it all depends on the stage of the plant

the best thing u can do is go to walmart garden section they sell a spray bottle with fluid oz marks on the side
here is my routine
week 1 1 cup or 4 oz of water
week 2 2 cups or 8 oz of water ..........here is were i start the slow feeding
week 3 12 oz of water
week 4 20 oz of water
week 5 26 to 32 oz of water and hold there untill i flush and cut the plant
week 6
week 7
week 8
week 9 i flush it out ...............give the soil several days to dry up move the plant into dark for 48 hours then cut and hang on a mason line for 6 to 7 days trim her up and put in the jars for curing

I lift the pots to feel how much water is left/ present in order to decide when more water is appropriate. Water a little at a time (when soil is dry it does not always like to absorb water and it will run down through and out of the pot) so pour enough for a little pool on the top of the dirt then give it a few minutes to soak up and put a bit more water on top ect. till watered IME this cuts down on time and hastle of watering since more water (relative to time) is grabbed by the soil than drains out of it making it smoother over all for me.

trick is to not water too much in the seedling stage i use almost dry soil and water with a spray bottle until it has a couple sets of leaves
then pretty much what that amish fucker said
i dont give a actual watering with run off until the plant has shown preflower or gained enough size to handle it
then i may not have to water for a week after
i also judge by picking the planter up after the plant is larger
in the seedling stage to preflower your pot should not feel heavy
if the roots dont have to work to find water they wont stretch out
