any LED boffins that know much about non-hydro lights

I found some LED flood lights that advertise 2 x 80w LEDS.
From what i understand the biggest LED currently runs at 3w.
It also advertises a 160 w light and has a power draw of 160w unlike most other that state thet are say 450w but really draw 150w (or whatever)

Its a flood light which implies that it covers a decent distance aka has decent penetration.
It just has white light, not blues and reds etc.

Color temperature: 6000-6500K (pretty much like a MH light)
Led luminous efficiency: 80-90Lm/W, Protection grade: IP65 (no idea what these mean)

Are these any good? If i could replace my 400W MH for veg with this I would be happy. I will prob still flower with 3 x 600w HPS for now.

Check out my grow. I'm using 85W white bridgelux LED chips which I just wired up and attached to a heatsink. They're doing a pretty nice job (although I am going to add a 400W HPS to my next grow, because LED is still too expensive per watt for my tastes).

White LEDs seem ideal for vegging by the way, as long as you can afford enough watts. My internodes were extremely tight, although I was growing plants that tend to be quite bushy anyway.

And IP65 means that it is waterproof and safe to use outdoors. Overkill for most indoor grows...particularly as an open case often helps make the LED easier to keep cool.

im in australia and i have bought cheap T5 LEDs from them with no worries (cost me $25) and works fine

The striplight i bought is a 8w T5 (thats 8w real electricity used) and puts out 550-620 lumens @ 5500-6000k spectrum. They can be gang wired in a line easily with a supplied adaptor. Therefore i could line 10 of them up next to each other for 80w of light. I suspect this would replace my current 400w MH light for veg.

What I was asking about tho is the fact that its a outdoor floodlight so it SHOULD have serious distance penetration unlike the other LEDs.
I was confused about the claim of 2 x 80w LEDs tho.

The idea of penetration is widely misunderstood. Photons will travel in a straight line until they are either absorbed or reflected. This means that penetration is simply about the number of photons being sent out by the light source.
Most LED panels don't show good penetration because they use colours which are too readily absorbed by leaves. This is one very good reason why white LEDs are (in my view) better, because less deep shade will be created by leaves.

So in answer to your question, yes. The floodlight will have good penetration in a grow situation. The apparent brightness of a single high power chip compared to a good quality equivalent wattage panel is probably due to the fact that humans are very poor at measuring brightness. If you had a panel of 80 x 3W white LEDs which draws 160W of power then the penetration would be very similar to that of your 2x80W "floodlights". One would probably look dimmer though, since a point source has a greater apparent brightness to humans than a diffuse source such as a panel.

Not sure if that makes sense? I'm a little bit toasted atm...

Since you got the drivers and the heatsinks already, sell your white LED's on e-bay and buy some big ass red and blue ones. :lol:

Unless you've never owned a HPS before, in that case you properly has to go through HPS to feel like a real grower like the rest of us.
And they do have one huge advantage THEY are noiseless ! and great room heaters, the reason I'm running the HPS in my closet right now
is because without it I would have to turn on a electric heater to feel comfy.

4 of them would draw 320w, while a 600w HPS really draws more like 650w

if i had 4 plants, would 4 x the above LED (one per plant) be as good as a 600w HPS over 4 plants?
Its almost half the electricity and the buy out price doesnt worry me.

or do i need 600w draw of LEDs to replace a 600w HPS in reality?

I think i would buy 8 red(660nm) 10W and 2 blue(455nm) 10W LED from this instead of a white 80W.

(it's properly more expensive if you buy single 10W drivers vs. a single driver for a 80W LED - but depending on where the led are used a big heatsink is avoided )

White light is wasting at least 1/3 of it's energy on green light, energy that would be better of, if it was used on red or uv instead.

the last link was a mostly red bit blue hydro light not a white light.
im just looking at ways of getting my electricity usage down at all costs.
