The government passes a budget for every fiscal year. This is what pays for running the government and spending on things like veterans' programs, to the FBI, defense department, medicare, the USDA etc. If no spending bill gets passed, the government shuts down.... this happened in 96 under clinton.

But yeah, I would imagine that this bill also includes a lot of crap. If the economy recovers, we'll be able to afford it some day. If not, we're fucked anyhow....

The Democrats are committing suicide.

Some Republicans voted for this package also ... they want the pork. Those who voted for the bill aren't listening to the people that got them elected.

In the meantime, in a three-week period, Sarah Palin has sold over a million copies of her new book and the estimate is that she will sell over three million copies before the book has run its course. I think there is a message in that factoid that both Democrats and Republicans should pay attention to.

What would that message be? That it's better to avoid talking about substance and rather dilly dally in some tired old culture war bullshit or constantly talk in generalities about your values and whatnot?

Trust me....they got the message a long time ago.

Here comes civil unrest:

Moody’s warns of 'social unrest’ as sovereign debt spirals

Britain and other countries with fast-rising government debts must steel themselves for a year in which “social and political cohesiveness” is tested, Moody’s warned.

Riot police clash with protestors during an anti G20 demonstration near the Bank of England. Moody's has warned future tax rises and spending cuts could trigger more social unrest.

In a sombre report on the outlook for next year, the credit rating agency raised the prospect that future tax rises and spending cuts could trigger social unrest in a range of countries from the developing to the developed world.
It said that in the coming years, evidence of social unrest and public tension may become just as important signs of whether a country will be able to adapt as traditional economic metrics. Signalling that a fiscal crisis remains a possibility for a leading economy, it said that 2010 would be a “tumultuous year for sovereign debt issuers”.

It added that the sheer quantity of debt to be raised by Britain and other leading nations would increase the risk of investor fright.
Strikingly, however, it added that even if countries reached agreement on the depth of the cuts necessary to their budgets, they could face difficulties in carrying out the cuts. The report, which comes amid growing worries about Britain’s credit rating, said: “In those countries whose debt has increased significantly, and especially those whose debt has become unaffordable, the need to rein in deficits will test social cohesiveness. The test will be starker as growth disappoints and interest rates rise.”
It said the main obstacle for fiscal consolidation plans would be signs not necessarily of economic strength but of “political and social tension”.
Greece, where the government has committed to drastic cuts in public expenditure, has suffered a series of riots over the past year which are thought to have been fuelled by economic pressures.

If you have to ask that question, you haven't been paying attention.

The message to the federal government is: Get the hell out of the lives of the ordinary citizen. We are not buying your marxist redistribution of wealth bullshit anymore. We want the national government, with all of its cronyism, corruption, and the theft of the fruit of our labors to stop. If it doesn't stop, we/they will MAKE it stop.

Americans are finally ready to step up to the plate in the name of liberty. Fascism and Marxism are passe. Be prepared for a huge shock in November of 2010 ... and another one in 2012.

Have you checked the polls to see where congress stands with the American people? How about Obama, have you checked his job ratings based upon the most recent polls?
